It sucks that a good chunk of our offensive staff is leaving. But everyone pretending that Bronco is really doing something so extraordinary by bringing an offensive staff with him that has been productive and recruits well is being delusional. This is what happens. Head coaches move on and get bigger paydays. Then they bring with them the people that they like and that produce for them, and those people make more money.

As for using his remaining time at BYU to recruit away the staff, even if Bronco had left right after the announcement it wouldn't have changed any of this. It's not like he doesn't have Anae's phone number.

This sucks but is neither extraordinary nor unexpected. This is the business of college football and we're just getting a particularly close look at it right now.

BYU fans haven't really experienced this. It sucks, but you are right.

An unprepared staff is better than no staff at all. Furthermore, as far as staff retention goes, this is what happens. The outgoing coach poaches who he wants to poach and leaves behind guys he doesn't want anymore.

The bowl game is collateral damage at this point. Sure it is going to suck to lose to the Utes again, but it is far more important for TH to make sure he does the best he can at protecting BYU's future.
Do you really believe TH had as little notice as is reported publicly? I do not.

I believe he should have assuaged staff so that they would not go, forbidden Bronco to talk to staff and let Anae coach the bowl game while trying hard to get Whit.

I would have been much more ruthless in the protection of BYU.

Whitt's in a haze. He sees Bronco cash in, he hates his boss, he's got the most pathetic fan-base in the nation (ask Stewart Mandel), he's forced to wear that god-awful color, he can't find a decent QB, he sits alone for lunch and is so despondent that he says "what's there worth saving?" when the fire alarm sounds. He just sat there.

He wants the BYU job so badly, but can't take it. He's like a rat lost in a maze, just sitting in a corner waiting for life to happen. I feel bad for him.
This is an ironic--in a funny way--place and time for you to be calling Whit and Utah fans sad. In response I'll mostly just let this thread including your post that elicited my post speak for itself. Your thread is more an argument why Whit would have nothing to do with BYU than secretly want it--except to the extent it shows that the delusion of being elect apparently still lives strong in some BYU fans. Whatever enviable thing Bronco has done no doubt Whit could best it if he wanted to because by any measure Whit has been more successful.

Would you tell your boss that you were interviewing for a job with a competitor? I know when I have been in these situations, I have only told my boss once I had formally accepted the job. Granted I think that TH has some inkling that Bronco might leave and I would expect he had done as much as he possibly could to prepare himself for the coaching search....what has occurred to prove otherwise?

How could he forbid Bronco from talking to staff? Anae was not a serious candidate and Anae knew as much. He is going to be the OC during the bowl game, but he is pissed. So you would have had a pissed/offended interim coach. Brilliant!

I am sure that TH isn't "trying hard to get Whit".

I think one of the most attractive things about moving to UVa for both Bronco and Anae is that there they get a much more realistic fan base. They have all of the upside of the money with none of the downside of expectations. UVa fans will be thrilled if they win eight games a season. They'll probably even write nice letters to the local paper about it and say nice things on local radio.

Yes. But it is extraordinary in the sense that they're doing it at a BYU staff meeting having not been locked out. It's rare that the departing coach is kept on board after announcement, even more so when the replacement coach hasn't been named. This has taken the normal instability of a coaching departure where staff poaching and uncertainty for those remaining are common and compounded it by keeping the departed in the building and in charge.

I really wouldn't care whether my boss called me into his office and offered me a hundred grand more to move with him or my former boss called me from his house and offered me a hundred grand more to move with him. I really don't see the difference.

Shoot- they might. They have the upside of being able to go somewhere if they win the conference without all the expectations of BYU's monster fanbase. Have you seen their stadium? Bronco's a Wahoo now. Hopefully he's so amped to go there he puts on a show for his new admin and fanbase during the bowl.

With Anae off to Virginia, I think that rules out or should rule out Ken N. We haven't heard any Lance Anderson buzz. KW's a pipe dream. That leaves all our eggs in the Kalani Sitake basket. His stock sure shot up fast. Risky, but it's all we got I guess, and he has a lot of pro's. Is Ty Detmer a serious OC candidate? That's very worrisome to me.

I'm not seeing how you protect BYU here.

You're going to assuage staff? How? Are you promising them a job? So your plan is to hire a new HC, but you're going to tell him from the beginning that they have to keep all of the existing staff - because you promised them that in order to give yourself the best shot at winning a bowl game? Really? Ha!

You can't forbid Bronco from talking to them (in spite of what CB is saying about Bevell & Carol). And if you get freaky about it, maybe they go ahead and take the job and just leave now - since you have made it clear you don't want anyone eventually leaving to stick around.

And you give Anae the interim job for a day without any intent of giving him the full-time job permanently? Letting him know this is his last week at the school? He's already offended, let's see if we can really burn down that bridge!!!

What you're talking about is potentially destroying BYU's future and future relationship with a portion of the already small pool of potential one day coordinators or even head coaching candidates (Who knows where Beck, Atuaia, 2J, etc. go from here or what BYU's needs are in the future.) all for one single game.

                          Silly.

I think that the best thing BYU has going for them right now is that the bowl game is against Utah.

You don't think Anae, Atuaia, Beck, Bronco, et all want to win? I think they recognize they're leaving this all behind - but I promise you that they haven't washed their hands of Utah or their interest in winning this game. Hell - winning this game would be Bronco's ultimate flip off to the fans who booed him in his first game as HC and have been asking for his replacement ever since.

Divorce doesn't hurt you just once. It hurts you first when you make the decision to split. It hurts you again once the lawyers sit down with you and start talking about how they will divide the marital assets. And it will hurt yet again when you see your ex happily gallivanting with a new significant other.

                              Eh...I'm over it already.

As I read in another thread somewhere - these guys had no guarantees. They had no reason to believe the new guy was going to keep them, and they had a job offer in their hands with a boss that they know and like.

Are BYU assistant coaches still year to year? Or has that changed?

I've resigned myself to the knowledge that BYU is entering a whole new world. More changes to come than when either Crowton or Bronco took over. Much more of the staff is leaving this time. Or at least it seems that way to me.
