No one was taking a stance that Nebraska would go undefeated. There were several games that were close prior to Purdue but Nebraska managed to take control and win and came very close to defeating Wisconsin on the road. Those were all games Nebraska lost last season. If the Buckeyes didn't expose the Huskers, Alabama certainly would have in the play-offs. If Alabama wins the playoff as expected, they will surpass 1995 Nebraska as the greatest CFB team ever per fivethirtyeight's analysis. They currently hold the number 1 spot after their SEC championship win. If they lose to Washington they would drop to at least #4. I find discussions like this very interesting and I can't say I have a lot of issues with fivethirtyeight's list or the fact that this year's Alabama team may end up with the top spot.
