First bad news of the 2015 season, Chris Fowler being replaced on GameDay by Rece Davis.

I thought Fowler was a staple of that show but I can deal with this shift. CGD may be my favorite TV show, to be honest, simply because it embodies everything I love about college football, which is my favorite sport bar none. Some stuff like specific personnel or the WSU flag or funny signs I can take or leave. But as for me and my house, there are two CGD traditions that I absolutely would not be able to abide if they were to be discontinued:Originally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostFirst bad news of the 2015 season, Chris Fowler being replaced on GameDay by Rece Davis.

1. Coming to your City: that song is like the "gentlemen, start your engines" of college football Saturday. Nobody cares about it outside of that show. That song is that show. When you hear it, you think of that show and you think of college football. They can change the lyrics of the rap every now and then, no problem, but that song has to remain in place for the show to work.
2. Picking the mascot head: i know it wasnt always a part of the show but it is now inextricably tied to it. Corso is going to die and someone else has to take that over but the tradition will live on somehow.
As long as they keep those things going, I can evolve alongside of the show. Fowler is definitely great and it will take awhile to get used to Davis. At least they arent bringing in Trey Wingo!Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

As Corso, who is maybe my favorite TV personality of all time, clearly took a big step back in health last year I started to wonder what should happen with the headgear when he is gone. It can't be someone robotic and stiff like Herby or almost 90% of the rest of the people at ESPN from cookie cutter journalism schools. It either needs to die with Lee or they need someone with a spark to do it. Can you imagine how boring Mark May putting on the headgear would be? Talk about a downer.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI thought Fowler was a staple of that show but I can deal with this shift. There are a few guys that I think could embrace it and make it their own and keep it fresh. Leach comes to mind, it has to be someone that knows the game and is a little crazy.Get confident, stupid

coming to your city wasnt alwasy the opening either. I remember at least 1 year of "Here comes the boom, ready or not..." around the turn of the century.

The person to take Corso's seat doesnt currently work for the network but I agree that whomever it is has to have some irreverence and personality.Originally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostAs Corso, who is maybe my favorite TV personality of all time, clearly took a big step back in health last year I started to wonder what should happen with the headgear when he is gone. Yeah it definitely was a subsequent addition. Much like the mascot head, it has worked really well.Originally posted by Coach McGuirk View Postcoming to your city wasnt alwasy the opening either. I think Rece Davis will be a capable replacement. I actually also really like College Gameday Final (I think i'm the only one). May and Holtz are annoying but entertaining, but Rece really made the show good. I wonder who they bring in to replace him.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostI thought Fowler was a staple of that show but I can deal with this shift. Coming to Your Cit-ay is a relatively recent addition, especially for those of us who began watching the show back when Craig James was on and Corso was filled with piss and vinegar. It has become a staple of the show but I wouldn't be outraged if it changed. The mascot head selection definitely needs to stick around somehow, but I agree with HFN that the proper person is key. The closest thing ESPN has to someone workable is Holtz. So yeah, they'll need to hire someone new.
Fowler is one of the most professional people in sports broadcasting today. It is probably impossible to match his level of preparation, but Reece Davis will do a good job. I have come to really enjoy his work on Gameday Final and think he will step in nicely.
Why is Fowler being moved? Is he officially supplanting Mussberger as the network's big-game announcer?

I was right! He is so much better than Mussberger. Brent has been over the hill for a few years now and it wasn't a venerable over the hill like Keith Jackson in his last few years. It was a "this guy isn't even talking about the game half the time" over the hill.

Sundry thoughts:
- MNF did away with "Are you ready for some football", which was way more iconic than the CGD song.
- I haven't watched more than 30 mins of CGD since my kids became old enough to have Saturday activities. I miss lazy Saturday AM with CGD.
- Fowler was good, I'm sure Davis will be fine.
- I like Musberger. He may not be what he once was, but his voice is one of the classics.
- Corso's demise is sad. He's not really an analyst anymore, he's the show's mildly senile mascot. He's the CGD version of BYU71."Sure, I fought. I had to fight all my life just to survive. They were all against me. Tried every dirty trick to cut me down, but I beat the bastards and left them in the ditch."

Clay Travis, who I really like despite his being a total SEC honk, offers 14 possible Corso replacements. Some are awful, but he offers one that is the best possibility I've heard, Petros Papadakis.
