"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

    • Even if we still don't get these guys, it's significant that they're suddenly talking to us, which wasn't happening under the previous coaching staff. We're going to improve recruiting. It's already starting to happen, and that is a big deal.

Why is that? Serious question. I know players loved Bronco but is he just the kind of guy that has to grow on a person as opposed to Kalani, who is reportedly a charming individual? I know it doesn't hurt that Ty Detmer is a star and should get any prep footballer's attention, but the BYU brand should do that all on its own.

Bronco's recruiting philosophy seems to be a lot different. I think it's becoming more apparent now that he didn't really like to spend that much time and effort on players who he had to work really hard for. I think just like you said, for him the BYU brand should sell itself. He also believes so much in his system and how he runs his program, that recruiting is almost secondary to that. I do think he gets about as much as you could expect from the talent he has, but I also think over the years he's let a lot of really good LDS talent go elsewhere because he fell in love with lesser talented guys who really wanted to go to BYU and who he felt he could mold within his system. BYU's recruiting classes under Bronco were ranked in the 50s and 60s. Ten years ago they'd routinely rank in the 20s and 30s. And the significant dropoff in former BYU players in the NFL over the last decade reflects that.

Kalani Sitake is much more recruiting-focused (like Lavell was) and had a lot of success taking a lot of those LDS guys BYU wasn't working as hard to get as Utah was. I do think Bronco was a good football coach and proved to be very good at teaching the game (defense anyway) to his players. He wasn't a very good recruiter though, is my opinion, and that had a lot to do with his general philosophy about running a program and how he wanted to spend his time and resources.

Bronco was the complete opposite of Gary Crowton, and I think that was by design at the time both on BYU's and Bronco's part. Crowton could recruit but was beyond horrible at teaching his players how to play. He sent lots of guys into the NFL from BYU teams that were losers. Bronco sends few into the NFL from BYU teams that win a lot of games, albeit not so many against the teams that have significantly higher level talent than us.

              • That seems to ring pretty true to what Bronco himself has admitted about his recruiting, noting specifically that BYU did "too little too late" to attract stars like Britton Covey and Taysom Hill. That kind of bugs. Oh well.

Sounds about right. You remember Lavell's rankings how I remember them.

                    • A bunch of commits over the weekend but no big names. Caden Haws, a center from Arkansas who, according to the recruiting sites, had offers from the military academies. His dad played for U and professionally. http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/footbal...en-Haws-171793

JT Gentry another olineman. He is from Colorado and his only other FBS offer was Air Force. http://www.scout.com/player/197019-j...ear=2015&s=338

Clark Barrington. Another lineman, he could play on either side of the ball. He is from Washington and did not have any other FBS offers. Word is that his little brother has some serious talent. After the new staff offered Barrington, Utah became interested. http://www.scout.com/player/204325-c...rrington?s=338

The last guy is Chris Wilcox. He is an intriguing one. Had FBS offers as a junior before being injured. He was committed to UC Davis. SUU was recruiting him, so this was Lamb's doing. He was elite speed. Lamb has a good track record with developing talent. http://www.scout.com/player/196572-chris-wilcox?s=338

3 OLs though. Getting some needed balance to the class.

                        Wilcox has wheels.

Gentry and Haws have really good film. Wilcox I am not sold on. Apparently he got injured and that affected his recruiting according to some. He ran track with Jamaal's sister Jaela.

                          • The knock on Haws seems to be only that he is too short to play anywhere else on the OL other than Center. He's a Koroma clone - even has the arms.

Haws preps at Pulaski Academy, where he started all 40 games from 2013-15. As a sophomore he was named a Super Sophomore, All-Arkansas Sophomore first-team, and All-Conference. As a junior his team won the 5A state title and Haws was named to the All-Arkansas second team. Pulaski repeated as state champs in 2015 and Haws was named to the USA Today All-Arkansas team, All-Arkansas First-Team, and was voted team MVP by his coaches. While highlight reels for centers aren’t usually too exciting, Haws has a nasty streak and his HUDL reel (shown below) is worth checking out.

                            • I liked Haws film. Reminds me a lot of Koroma. I think he'll be a good player for us.

                              • Gentry's uncle is a close friend of mine. He said the kid really put on weight this past year, but has always had the family's height. A couple of his other uncles played college basketball. Hopefully this translates to an athletic tackle who is light on his feet. He played in an option offense in high school and had offers from AFA and WYO.
