Take heart. Their program is generally rated top three along with BYU, but they still fare significantly worse on the CPA exam:

FTR, As a senior, TM averaged 2.9 yards a carry and had a passer rating of 140.

I'm not sure that guy molded Taylor Martinez into anything other than what he was when he arrived at Nebraska.
Shawn Watson left Nebraska after Taylor Martinez's Freshman year. Martinez was not recruited as a QB by anyone except Nebraska and as QB coach and OC, Watson coached Martinez into a legimate D1 QB. It's not surprising to me that Martinez didn't improve after Watson left for Louisville. At Louisville, Watson was the QB coach and OC for another QB - Teddy Bridgewater. His QB rating went from 132 --> 161 --> 171.

And FTR, Martinez played the few games he did as a Sr with a broken foot which explains his 2.9 YPC. Martinez arrived at Nebraska with a promise to start out at QB but many thought he would soon play safety. Watson gets credit for making Martinez into respectible QB and the player who now holds Nebraska all-time passing and total offense records.

Edit: Just for falafel - Shawn Watson is the Texas Longhorn OC.

Meh, Martinez got by on his explosive athletic ability in the run game, similar to Denard Robinson - was never really much of a QB. First three games of his freshman season he ran for 127, 157 and 137 yards. I'm not convinced this Watson should get much credit for TM.

        • I didn't realize Taylor Martinez was the Texas OC.

Paperback Writer doesn't get involved in BYU threads unless there is a Nebraska connection.

Forget Martinez then. Watson should get credit for Terry Bridgewater at Louisville. He also gets credit for Nebraska's Zac Taylor who improved from 116 QB rating before Watson to a 146 QB rating under Watson and was first team all-Big 12 in 2006. The point being that Texas has a quality QB coach and OC and could possible make a big difference with Tyrone Swoopes play when BYU plays Texas this Saturday.

Fair enough. I just had to nitpick about TM because I remember a guy really never became much of a QB while at Nebraska. Here's to BYU making Watson's offense look about as productive as Manny Diaz' defense.

Sorry, my point of reference for college football is Nebraska.

                • Poster on CB with a nice statistical morsel re the growing legend of Strong the Mobile QB Destroyer.

I keep hearing on the radio today that Strong is the master of defending the qb rush as in his whole time at Louisville the qb's only ran for 600 yards total.

So that got me thinking. I went to his schedule last year and he did not face a single running qb the entire year. In fact, 7 of the qbs had negative rushing yards on the season. In only one case did Louisville actually hold the qb to less yards per carry than their season average.

The 600 yard stat is useless in this discussion. I imagine Texas will work overtime on Hill and he won't run amok like he did last year (nor does he have to for BYU to win) but it isn't that Strong has had a history of defending qbs like Hill before.

                    • I will be surprised if this magic OC can get a kid who threw for less that 50% in his high school career to be a credible passer in his first start.

Their decimated O Line and our new found depth at the D Line and CB probably won't lead to us blitzing the shit out of the new kid.

                        • I am not worried about Texas' offense. I am worried about our ability to put up points on their improved defense in a hostile environment. I think if we can score more than 20 we will win but I am not overly confident about it. We looked good against Uconn but I could see us struggling versus Texas.

Taysom Hill went 9/26 for 129 yds against Texas in 2013. He was a credible enough passer in that game for a BYU victory.

I think BYU looked good at times against UConn. But the Cougars let the Huskies hang around in that game far too long. I expect a defensive game decided on turnovers and field position (i.e field goals). I still think BYU wins but it will be a very different game then last year.
