I think good people likely made mistakes. The Church and BYU are both made up of many good and imperfect people. Most of them do their best and still make mistakes--intentional or not. There are people who place one or both institutions on a pedestal, and really struggle with situations such as this. There are also people who place themselves on that same pedestal, thinking they are better than others. This situation will be good medicine for both groups. I'll admit that I've been proud that BYU's clean track record, and a little humility is good for me. Ultimately, I believe the most important thing will be how BYU deals with the issue. They should be able to come out of this just fine.

This wasn't a "mistake". It was premeditated fraud and intentional cheating. I think BYU is a department of the LDS Church. This is wholly consistent with a pattern of mendacity throughout the institution. I'm not surprised. Truth telling is not a value there.Originally posted by Bo Diddley View PostI think good people likely made mistakes. The Church and BYU are both made up of many good and imperfect people. BM should be toast for lack of institutional control. Also, who could believe he didn't know about this or that he wasn't deliberately treated like a mushroom with his complicity. He should be toast but probably BYU lacks USC's integrity. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

USC pushed out Pete Carroll because similar infractions occurred with respect to Reggie Bush, a single player, and no USC employee was even involved in the cheating.Originally posted by CJF View PostCould you please clarify the hooded statement? When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

Even if I were to accept your predictably cynical characterization of what happened, even before the truth has come out--very telling how you jump to the darkest conclusions--you wouldn't call that a mistake? Every misstep that we as mortals make are mistakes, large and small. I'm sad for you that you struggle to view the world through charitable or even optimistic eyes, but then I haven't walked in your shoes.Originally posted by SeattleUte View PostThis wasn't a "mistake". Did you feel the same way when parents and athletes complained to Chris Hill for 5 years about their swim coach and he ignored them? I must have missed the part where Derek said the NCAA, and its asinine enforcement branch, wouldn't react. From all accounts Busby is a genuinely great, and moral, guy. That's Derek's only point. I'm not sure how that leads you to the conclusion he is clueless. The NCAA can go to hell, as far as I'm concerned. There isn't a more toothless, corrupt, petty organization in all of organized sports.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostDerek's love for and loyalty to Busby won't mean squat if he has broken the rules as alleged. You think the NCAA will care about how kind Busby was when he bailed Derek out?Last edited by UVACoug; 05-22-2014, 09:58 PM.

Can you show me one legitimate source that says he was fired? Its amazing how so many of you self-proclaimed intelligent people believe anything you read on the internet or hear on the radio.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostI was referring to his idealistic view of Busby coming out of this relatively unscathed due to BYU and the players rallying around him. Admirable, but not realistic. Busby was fired by BYU six months ago. He is already toast. No one person is ever greater than the entire program.
