It's Monday and nobody has come up with a clever title for the ND-BYU game
And whatever Dear Leader Lebowski says I guess we have to do.
Hey. You never do what I tell you do to.

Really?? I guess you didn't see "will the Golden Dome lose it's shine"?
I had requested DDD put something together about the Grotto in his title but I fear even he grew a bit timid after the season-long game-thread backlash. Really a lot of material to work with on this game and I expected more. I think under normal circumstances there is little chance he gives this thread title the thumbs up. Maybe the bowl game will inspire him.

There could be some clever wordplay centered around the different sponsoring religious organizations of the two private universities playing against each other. Let's see if anyone can come up with something good.
Notre Dame also has some traditions and sayings that could be exploited for a great thread title. "Win one for the Gipper" or "Play like a champion today." Those are just a couple of examples.
When it comes to thread title creation I may be Skye PoVey to Triple's Trent Trammel, but can we talk about the game, not just the title?
I have no desire to particpate in thread where people are trying to show off their vocabulary. Although I know what the big words mean, others may not.
Driving home this week, GoMo was interviewing the voice of the Irish, their Greg Wrubell, if you will, about the state of Notre Dame football both now and in the future. His comments were interesting. He said that currently, Jack Swarbrick's main headache is Notre Dame having too many game commitments to fulfill (would be nice if Holmoe had that problem). As everyone knows, the transition to ACC scheduling will eliminate slots for more traditional ND matchups, but according to this guy, Swarbrick has only identified 3 games as non-negotiable annual matchups: SC, Navy, and Stanford. Coupled with the 5 ACC games, Notre Dame is now in the unfamiliar position of having to schedule only 4 "new" games a year.
The thought right now is to rotate a couple of slots every few years among Purdue, Michigan State, and perhaps Michigan. The final 2 slots would be for easier opponents. He didnt say that outright, but he revealed that Swarbrick's new scheduling philosophy will be "reflective of the new college football playoff reality," that you can't play strong teams every single week and hope to come out undefeated and uninjured.
I don't ever see the Irish scheduling a D2 school, but we may see more games against Army or the like than we have seen in the past.
He also said that ND has already tried to buy out of the Arizona State game but the ASU people were completely unwilling to negotiate on that. He said that currently there are no plans to buy out of the BYU series, but there are also no firm dates for when they will come to Provo.
I'm really anxious to see the new playoff criteria. If a conference crown is not a pre-requisite and SOS plays a greater factor, this could actually help BYU in future scheduling. Currently, the difficult task for BYU is getting schools to take a non-conference break late in the season. But for schools looking to add a SOS boost late in season, a BYU game could be just the ticket.
Finally, I didnt know this, but the Michigan series was cancelled because the contract had an out clause that had to be exercised by the end of halftime of the last ND/michigan game. If it was not exercised, it would renew again for an extended period of time. Given the uncertain scheduling landscape for ND and their unwillingness to extend a Michigan series for such a period of time, Swarbrick decided it best to cancel it, figuring they could pick up shorter home/home series at a later date.
I don’t know much about Mormons, except from what I learned from watching the Mormon episode of “South Park” and “The book of Mormon. And I don’t know much about Catholics, other than they’re not very high on birth control or abortion. I do know that BYU’s football team is playing at Notre Dame Saturday in what could be called the Jesus Bowl or the Religion Bowl or simply Catholics vs. A Religion People Don’t Really Understand. Or the Jesus loves us most bowl.
Here’s what I know about Mormons: drinking alcohol, and even coffee and tea are verboten. And Jesus partied with the Native Americans here in ancient times, who were Caucasian. And here’s what I know about the Catholic faith: it’s a very conservative and somewhat strict faith where its followers can’t eat meat on Fridays or have sex before marriage.
That's enough work for me. Heading home to pack. next stop: Chicago, my kind of town!
