Chip Brown is reporting that the Nick Saban, Mike Tomlin, David Shaw and Jim Harbaugh are all candidates for the job. No word yet on whether Bill Belichick and Sean Payton are also considering the job or not. Bill Parcells and Joe Gibbs are also thinking about coming out of retirement because the Texas job is just that great according to Chip Brown.

USC ended up with Sarkisian and that job's as good as the Texas job. In fact, with aTm being in the SEC and Texas essentially relegated to Div. 1aa by virtue of its second class status in the Big 12, I think that USC job is now much better.

I don't discount the fact that Saban and Shaw may consider the job if Texas has the right money, but Tomlin and Harbaugh are pipe dreams.

Harbaugh should give Texas permission to talk to his offensive coordinator, Greg Roman. Every 49ers fan will tell you that Roman has earned a gig like that and they'd be excited to see him get an opportunity to be a HC someplace else.

Come on. Mac has had a nice long run. Nobody can really argue that Texas hasn't been patient with him.

I think that's debatable but I don't think it's an outrage that he is being forced out. All I'm saying is careful what you wish for because it can get much, much worse. Texas has the advantage of being able to offer several times the money Nebraska did when they fired their coach so maybe you'll land a Saban and be fine.

Another source says Mack is leaving...

'Worn down' Mack Brown's resignation as Texas coach expected by end of week

All signs point to the Mack Brown era ending soon at Texas.


Two sources familiar with the process said Tuesday that Brown’s negotiated resignation after 16 seasons and one national title as Longhorns football coach is expected by the end of the week. Another source indicated that Brown may be worn down from the constant rumors and would be ready to leave.


At the same time, nothing has been agreed upon, the sources said.


Brown, 62, has actually been a victim of his success for much of his career. His record at Texas is 158-47, the second-most wins to legendary coach Darrell Royal. But Brown’s gone just 30-20 the last four seasons, including 18-17 in the Big 12.


Other media outlets, including ESPN, also carried reports of Brown’s possible resignation.


Speculation on a successor immediately focused on Alabama coach Nick Saban and his three BCS national title rings in what would be a blockbuster hire. Current Texas regent Wallace Hall and former regent Tom Hicks met with Saban’s agent last January about a possible move to Texas.


Online reports indicate that Saban has been offered a contract extension at Alabama but has yet to sign it.

Considering the HC history of Texas, Nebraska, and OU; I agree with Omaha 680 that's it's very debatable. Just look at UT post Darrell Royal, Nebraska post Tom Osborne, and OU between Barry Switzer and Bob Stoops. Things can get worse and have at each of those legacy programs when a successful HC retired or was forced out. So I think UT should be careful with what they are wishing for when escorting Mack Brown to the curb. Perhaps Omaha 680 and myself see things a bit differently because of our Nebraska roots. Nebraska was patient with Tom Osborne and waited 21 years for another national championship.

But as the Dude knows, Texas is not Nebraska and not even OU. The Longhorns have resources those schools dream of and there's little risk of things heading south under Saban. The advantages Texas enjoys are not just financial - many schools can throw large sums of $$$ at their preferred HC candidate. Texas has recruting advantages so almost any competent HC should be successful in Austin. Nevertheless, I'm almost certain that Longhorns, Inc. thought they would have won at least one national championship between Darrell Royal and Mack Brown. At least Mack's got the 2005 NC, something that hadn't occurred in Austin since 1969. Maybe Saban could have more success at UT....maybe.
