It's interesting that the two Big 12 teams who were always "okay" in the Big 12 have each had a year where they look great in their respective divisions of the SEC. The flip side of that coin is that the other two teams to leave the Big 12 in Nebraska and Colorado haven't fared as well (Colorado needs no explanation, Nebraska got lit up in the B10 Champ game last year, lost to a bad Minny team today).

That was a bad loss for Nebraska at Minnesota. Anyway, Nebraska's fall from the elite ocurred before they joined the Big Ten.

2009 (Big 12): 10-4 (6-2) Lost CCG
2010 (Big 12): 10-4 (6-2) Lost CCG
2011 (Big 10): 9-4 (5-3)
2012 (Big 10): 10-4 (7-1) Lost CCG
2013 (Big 10): 5-2 (2-1)

Missouri is having a very good year in 2013 but they were not particularly good last year in their debut season in the SEC: 5-7 (2-6). Missouri still has lost more conference games than Nebraska since both schools switched conferences and the Huskers had a season head start. Texas A&M's improvement is a result of a change in coaching staff rather than a change in conference. The Aggies probably have more success in the Big 12.

Nebraska has always had to recruit nationally. Texas is only a significant slice of a much larger pie that also includes California, Florida, Arizona, the Midwest and wherever talent can be persuaded to play at Nebraska. Nebraska recruited Texas fairly well while in the Big 8 (when Texas schools had their own conference). The hope is that any offset in Texas recruiting (which did pick up when Nebraska was in the Big 12) with recruits from Ohio, Illinois, etc. who want to play in the Big Ten. In other words, trying to sign players who may not be offered by Ohio St. and Michigan rather than Texas recruits not offered by Texas and OU.

What hurts Nebraska recruiting more than anything is not playing for conference championships (or playing and getting blown out) and not being in the national championship conversation. Convincing recruits to come to Lincoln, NE for 3-5 years is not an easy sell. Nebraska has excellent facilities, very good academic support, good tradition, some of the best fan support, and good coaching (although I harbor doubts about Pelini and his staff). But usually what convinces a higly sought recruit to sign with Nebraska is the opportunity to win championships.

As for Scott Frost. I still hope he will be on the Nebraska coaching staff some day as OC or HC. But I had the same hopes for Tom Rathman. IMO, if Nebraska falls apart in November against Michigan, Michigan St., Penn St., and Iowa: Scott Frost's telephone will ring once again. Nebraska failed to lure Frost because they were unwilling to offer him their OC position (before Frost was OC at Oregon). I doubt the same mistake is made again and I think it will take a HC offer to get him out of Eugene. And I think Frost accepts if he's offered the HC position at Nebraska.

Question on the game - why in the world was the penalty for illegal touching declined?

It happened in the end zone and would have been a safety had they accepted it. And the location of the penalty would have been reviewable - and I just rewound it and both the pass and catch clearly happened in the end zone. Someone made the decision to decline before they thought about their options...
