That is right, you can't have a 1-0 game.

Well - you may not be able to have a 1-0 score in a football game. But A TEAM can score 1 point.

Two quirky rules I like pulling out with this kind of conversation: A team that just surrendered a touchdown has the option to kick off following the PAT. I've never seen that one before, which is surprising when you think about it, because it eliminates the opposition's try at an onside kick late in the game.

Also, any fair catch can be followed up by a free kick. If it goes through the uprights, it's worth three points. To add to the quirkiness of this rule, it's legal in the high school and pro game, but not college. Go figure. I've heard of it being used once in the pros (by Jeff Fisher at Tennessee; it failed, IIRC) and I actually saw it executed to perfection at the high school level once.
So if you fair-catch a punt at your opponents 40-yard line, you can attempt a FG on the next play and still have the ball if it's missed?

I believe by "free kick" they mean that you can attempt an undefended FG on the next play. However, if you miss I do not believe that you get to keep the ball.

So Johnny Manziel can sort of play football.

Sheesh. I've seen two of his games: Alabama and this one. He is unreal.

287 yards passing with 2 TDs. 197 yards rushing with 2 TDs. Wow.

287 passing and 229 rushing. I'm glad Joey Harrington made the point that he was just 13 yards away from becoming only the second QB ever to throw for 300 and rush for 200. Marques Tui having been the only player to do it 10-15 years ago. When Tui did that, I thought it was one of the most impressive individual feats I'd seen in football and didn't think it would be duplicated for a long time. I was right, but the only reason Manziel didn't surpass those numbers is that it was a blowout and A&M took the foot off the gas pedal early in the 4th quarter. In a close game he could have gone for 350+ and 250+.

What a performance after having just won the Heisman.

Correct. And I'm pretty sure it's a live ball situation once kicked, i.e. you can return the kick if its in the field of play. If the FG is good, you kick off. But that should never happen because such a free kick should only be run if time expires on the kick. If there were enough time to run a play you would do so
