I've done stuff like that before. I remember doing a whole bunch of that right after Crowton was fired. The glory years dummy variable was positive, big, and significant after controlling for things like homefield, opponent quality, quarterback experience, etc.

I once had some good advice about overreacting and whining about someone else. Don't remember for sure, but it seemed to go along the lines of take a deep breath and ignore the person that is bothering you.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostI am dead serious. Go read that U vs Y thread. It's an abomination. We lost a game we we were given ~53% odds of winning and you would think it is the end of civilization as we know it. Some posters were even wishing a violent death on our head coach The funny thing is, somebody was mocking the meltdown on CB. I can't imagine it was any worse than our meltdown.
Some of the criticism, complaints, whining if you will is over the top, but it is a very, very small minority. Most of the criticism has at least enough merit to discuss.

Yep, and when it's Viking making the predictions it's even more crazy to think it'll come to pass.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostPeople are getting a little crazy about the state of the program simply because of the way the rivalry game has gone lately. It's one game each season. BFD.
Granted, the Utah game is not what it once was for me. Some of that is due to my increasing age but most is the fact I live in a place where there are few BYU fans and almost no Utah fans. Things are very civil at church after the Holy War since the one Ute fan we have in the ward has actually attended more BYU games in the past 5 years than Ute games (and he's a nice guy)."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Not just the rivalry, but the stature of the two programs in comparison. Utah used to be nothing. Their program is on far stronger ground now. And they're doing it with LDS coaches, players, and fan base. Something we owned 30 years ago.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostPeople are getting a little crazy about the state of the program simply because of the way the rivalry game has gone lately. It's not a zero sum game. But it's pretty close. We are giving it to Utah through a series of strategic failures.

We're 3-8 against them over the last 11 years. It's taken miracles for us to beat them over this time. They've been invited to the PAC10, won 2 BCS games, and completely surpassed us over that time.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostPeople are getting a little crazy about the state of the program simply because of the way the rivalry game has gone lately. All while we sit idly by and pontificate on how awesome yesteryear was. Our administration isn't committed to playing football at the highest level, in my opinion. They overplayed their B12 hand and now we're stuck in a bad situation. But hey, we're on TV a lot. There is that. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

how are you controlling for the slow, white guy variable?Originally posted by pelagius View PostI've done stuff like that before. I remember doing a whole bunch of that right after Crowton was fired. This. I can't believe how badly we've been outclassed by the Utes. You can't just sit back and say it's "one game". It's two different fates for each program. One is blessed, the other is cursed.Originally posted by The_Douger View PostWe're 3-8 against them over the last 11 years. It's taken miracles for us to beat them over this time. This is exactly what I'm talking about. Your comparison is only a comparison to Utah. And then people take that comparison to Utah and think it means doomsday for BYU, when in reality BYU as a comparison to itself is fine. The program has finished in the top 25 five of the last 6 years and just a couple years ago went through a period of three consecutive top 15 finishes for the first time in history (if I'm remember that right). Nothing has changed to a considerable degree.Originally posted by The_Douger View PostWe're 3-8 against them over the last 11 years. It's taken miracles for us to beat them over this time. BYU is mostly what it's always been, and I think Pelagius graph shows that. BYU beat the curve by being innovative, but it could really only do that once, and for a short period. Otherwise, it's pretty much business than usual. So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

The biggest issues is that Bronco seems to think that school is so hard at BYU that half of these guys he recruits can't handle it. Bronco's rules for grades exceed what is required at other schools. School is not that hard.Originally posted by Viking View PostThis. I can't believe how badly we've been outclassed by the Utes. You can't just sit back and say it's "one game". Another is that top flight players don't want to come to BYU, they want to play in the PAC10 or elsewhere. Now they can be Mormon and do that at Utah.
Another is the admin is so afraid of any sort of scandal that it's tightened the screws on who can come even more.
So, when kids like Ngata, Star, and Te'o don't make it here, it just kills us. Could you imagine if Te'o and Star were on our team? Wow. The top flight kids don't come to BYU. I don't care if kids make mistakes. Part of the gospel is forgiveness and getting over this stuff. Part of the gospel is helping others succeed in areas they struggle in (grades, WoW, chastity).
Playing football at BYU these days is like being a missionary for four years. It's absurd. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

you're being far too calm about the independence quandary. I encourage you to panic.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostThis is exactly what I'm talking about. Things have changed. These guys we're seeing now are Broncos guys. Back when we were in the T15, a lot of the team was Crowton's guys. And losing ot your rival 8 of 11 times is a big deal. If you don't think it is, then take a look at who's been winning the head to head instate battles lately. Hint: It's not us.
Sorry, call me little brother, but I want what Utah has. I want a BCS level conference with big time games on a recurring 1:1 basis. I want an easy landing if we suck, so that we still have good money coming in and a way to rebuild if things go poorly. I want a conference that we can point to for top level recruits and say "We play Texas and Oklahoma on a regular basis. Tons of kids go to the NFL from here every year. We rival the SEC in conference strength"; so top LDS kids like I mentioned in my previous post will go to BYU.
I hate what we're doing right now. The season feels over after one game. Will donate kidney for B12 membership.

Looking back, I think I speak for most Utes fans when I say we would have been thrilled to be "cursed" to BYU's current level in the 1970s. You think things are bad now? As a fan of Utes hoops, I've said for the last five years that things couldn't get any worse. Guess what? They can... and BYU is nowhere near that point, unless you envision nothing but an apocalyptic future as an independent.Originally posted by Viking View PostThis.
