  • Adventures in officiating

Whether you are a byu or Utah fan the last drive by byu in the game was curious. Did the official get the call right in regards to having byu kick again?

From last years Utah vs USC game:

"All unsportsmalike conduct fouls by substitutes are enforced as dead ball fouls," Pac-12 officiating consultant Mike Pereira said in a statement. "Since the game was over, the penalty could not be enforced and the referee stated it was declined by rule."
Harris received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on a similar play last season and said he paid special attention to not doing the same thing in Saturday's game. The new NCAA-wide celebration rule is supposed to cancel out scores on plays where the scoring player celebrates before reaching the end zone, but that was ruled to not be the case on the USC-Utah play because Harris was not the offending player. A USC spokesperson said the updated ruling was a "collaborative effort between the Pac-12 and USC."

checking out the play by play the kick was called as unsportsmanlike

1st and 10 at UTAH 34 Team pass incomplete.
2nd and 10 at UTAH 34 Riley Nelson pass incomplete.
3rd and 10 at UTAH 34 BYU penalty 15 yard Unsportsmanlike Conduct accepted, no play.
1st and 10 at UTAH 49 Riley Stephenson 36 yard field goal MISSED.
    End of 4th Quarter
This is the exact situation to byu v Utah game. visiting team kicking a fg to tie. fg is blocked, home team called for Unsportmanlike conduct after the block.

Any refs out there that can clarify?

Can't you advance a blocked kick, though? They were on the field while the play was still going, would be my thought, but I'm not an official.

sure you can advance a blocked kick. However the foul was unsportmanlike on the substitutes (Utah players and fans)

The kicking team advance a blocked kick that does not cross the LOS. That was the difference between this one and 2010.

The defending team can advance any kick, blocked or not. It is treated just like a punt in that regard

As long as the ball didn't cross the line of scrimmage BYU can advance it. Flags started to fly before JD was down.

Well, they were on the field before the play was over.

I don't get why there's so much hand wringing about it. I thought it was quite straightforward.

I need to see a video of this. That is what I thought but a friend in here is claiming otherwise.

The rules on an unsportsmanlike penalty can't be that black and white. Otherwise, on any last second play the opposing team's bench could all run on the field and disrupt the play, to no negative consequence. It had to be called the way it was.

Say a team is down by less than a touchdown. A receiver catches the ball with no time left. A player on the sidelines runs in and tackles him. You're saying game over?

Why didn't Utah get another kick then against USC?

Was the penalty last year on USC sideline or on the kid returning the blocked FG for a TD celebrating/taunting? Since it took away the USC score I assumed it was on the returner, had there been time left it would have been USC's ball at the 15 yard line, not Utah getting another kick.

If the penalty was on the USC sideline then it does appear that the rule was applied differently on Saturday night.

Because SC recovered the ball. If Utah would have had the ball trying to make a play, and USC bench players were on the field, they would have to allow them to kick again.

It was on the USC sideline. The player who took it in for a score was careful not to excessively celebrate (he was flagged the year before for it).

Why does SC recovering the ball have anything to do with it? None of the players or fans from eithe SC or Utah had any effect on the play.
