Riley's fault? It becomes Riley's fault when it's actually Riley's fault. One of the three attempted field goals made would have saved the day. A db not slipping and falling on a crucial play in the endzone in the first quarter would have saved the day. The center not snapping the ball unbidden would have saved the day. Riley threw an INT, but he also threw some TDs and made a hustle play on a 4th and long that gave us a shot to win. Not to mention a 20 yard scramble in the 4th quarter that kept us alive. I guess the real question is not "when does it become Riley's fault" but rather, When will you start watching the games before commenting online?"I'm anti, can't no government handle a commando / Your man don't want it, Trump's a bitch! Scrimmage kicks (punts) are governed by their own sent of rules. All penalties that occur on scrimmage kicks, with the exception of kick/catch interference, are penalized from the previous spot.Originally posted by Portland Ute View PostAnother question to the football rules geniuses of CUF: On the punt that BYU was called for holding and repunted, the hold was called because a BYU player tackled a Utah player that was attempting to block the punt.
This happened in the end zone.
The flag was thrown at the spot in the endzone.
Is that not a safety?

Heaps started 2-2 last year against a similar schedule. (I would argue, OM on the road, Texas on the road, a better Ute team at home, and UCF is a tougher stretch)Originally posted by Hsaru View PostWhat will it take you to turn on Riley being a "good" QB? If Riley starts 2-2 I think his supporters should call for the yank and bring on the Hill

Hsaru you are truly a football imbecile. You brought up Max earlier in this thread. Max had one of the worst performances ever in the rivalry in 2008. Riley's performance in this game was nowhere near that bad.Originally posted by Hsaru View PostWhat will it take you to turn on Riley being a "good" QB? A bad game in a loss against BSU? And please stop trying to compare Riley to Beck and Max, it is offensive.
Just a refresher about what Beck did against Utah in 2006.
375 yards, 4 tds no ints, no fumbles(5 less than Riley?)
Also no QB can be put in holes by constant penalties and be expected to will the offense to crawl out. It doesn't work that way. Anyone who is placing this loss entirely on Riley is a moron. The offense as a whole broke down because it was constantly put in long yardage situations because of penalties.
Another thing, when Riley throws a pick he attempts to, and in this case did, make the tackle.

Nice retort. The only thing I'm denying is purchase to your weak, hilariously biased arguments.Originally posted by Hsaru View PostDenial is a strong thing apparently.

You can't criticize Riley without adding tons of qualifiers and spread blame, what a joke. Max did something in his career to be given a pass including beating Utah twice(much better teams than what Riley played) and Oklahoma. Trying to use that game to get Riley off the hook is incredibly disingenious.
And LOL at that last comment, too bad Riley tripped over his own player trying to recover a fumble on a bad snap, was pretty embarrassing. When you are resorting to that as your defense of a player you know you have lost.

So, just so I understand, had that been a standard offensive play from scrimmage, it would have been a safety?Originally posted by Shaka View PostScrimmage kicks (punts) are governed by their own sent of rules. This is BS.Originally posted by Shaka View PostThe end of that game was bizarre. The Utes should have been penalized prior to the first field goal because of the crowd rushing the field. Also the clock operator should be fired. I've rarely witnessed more egregious time keeping homerism.
The clock operator doesn't stop the clock when he sees the ball hit the ground. They are supposed to stop it when signaled by the officiating crew. The human delay from recognition by the official seeing the ball hit the ground, to the signal of incomplete, to the operator seeing the signal, to the operator stopping the clock causes discrepancies throughout an entire game that likely total 30-60 seconds, depending on how pass heavy a game is. The officials have the advantage to use slow motion to determine the exact time that the ball hit the ground. Which they did and correctly placed time back on the clock. To suggest that the clock operator blatantly ran off the clock is just sour grapes, and frankly I am surprised to read that from you.
The officials on the field thought that the game was over as well, based on the fact that the back judges and the line judges started walking off the field. They were only returned when the replay offical notified the referee that he was reviewing the play. To call a penalty on the fans for thinking the game was over(as many of the officials thought as well) would have been overkill, and they correctly refrained. The second call was correct, and I have no gripe. I would have if they had flagged the first incident. Also, it likely would have only been a delay of game penalty as it was a dead ball, not during live play as the blocked kick.
As far as the official winding the clock on the downed ball with :08 left, they corrected the time back to :08 when they realized the error. No harm, no foul."The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."

One thing I've noticed is that delusional BYU fans love to mention all the fluke things that happened that hurt BYU, but conveniently don't mention all the fluky things that kept BYU in the game. If you mention "the snap" and how that is what lost us the game without mentioning "the Sellwood Shuffle" that allowed BYU to have any chance you are lying to yourself.
BYU got WAY more lucky breaks than Utah, how many fumbles did BYU have that luckily ended up harmless and sure ints right in the hands of Ute players?

I've heard from different fan bases that Utah isn't simulating the snap, rather the safeties are calling out a line shift. That lateral shift generally happens right before the snap is believed to occur so that the offensive line doesn't have time to account for blocking. The safeties call out "shift" and the D-line jumps.Originally posted by USU Coug View PostThis is funny. I have heard from a couple of different fan bases that Utah is notorious for this. It is bush league but it is almost impossible to get that called a penalty. Obviously the refs are so far away they aren't going to hear it. Why the hell hasn't BYU prepared for it. Maddening how its always something with this team. Whit knows his shit when it comes to BYU.
Regardless, it's 7 year old football. You are told and KNOW the count. You go on it. Not on "shift". Not when the d-line jumps and moves. On the count.
Utah's done line shifts for years and years. Surely, if it was illegal, other programs would have alerted conference officials.
But BEYOND that, the opposing coaches that play Utah frequently would have prepared their teams for it. I'm just sayin'...Last edited by Portland Ute; 09-16-2012, 08:49 PM.
