We got Heaps. We got the best QB in the country. And instead of taking that talent, tempering it, molding it, teaching it competitive fierceness and posie, and ultimately utilizing it, we ran him off and went with a dude who is a less talented version of the kind of QB our OC was in college.

Without getting into Heaps vs Nelson talk, I will say the cmon denominator in our struggles is Doman.

But what can we do? Is there a via me replacement for him? It doesn't seem like it. I think BYU will give him another year before his seat starts to get warm.

And that's the real downside of Riley. He doesn't have the gun to get it downfield.

Yeah, I'm not sure what people are really expecting there. Most of the throws he tried to make beyond 10 yards were just floating and wobbling all over the place like they had no purpose in getting anywhere. And I think we knew this was going to happen. I know much has been made about the fact that his downfield passes "at least give our receivers a chance to make a catch," but the fact of the matter is that even most of his downfield completions in other games are just not good throws. It's great that Hoff can go just over a midget from Weber St. and get it, but that type of stuff doesn't work against a Utah caliber D. Against them you actually have to make the kind of throws that beat a defense, and he just can't do it.

Also, his ball picks up some zip when he can get his whole body into it and heave it, but we already knew that without the kind of time he gets against crappy opponents he just doesn't have the raw arm strength to pull it off (see also TCU, Tulsa, etc., last year).

i'm really confused about how the magical underwear sign on the front row of the muss made it into the game.

Crap like that makes me happy that this game is going to take a hiatus.

The girl who is in charge of the MUSS sits behind me with her family. She's very devout LDS and if she had known it was there, she would have gone right to whoever had the sign and what would happen would make what's going on in Egypt, Libya, etc. look very mellow.

There's just not a reason for that, and I wish the LDS contingent of Utah fans wouldn't stand for it. That would be like wandering around with a cross or a menorrah at a game. It's just strange they'd do that.

Agree. the reason he didn't go down field is because he cant. He looked even worse than usual tonight, i thought. I wonder if the back spasms were preventing him from getting good rotation or something?

The rivalry and world affairs will both take a turn for the better when both factions learn to police their own extremists. I'm glad the comparison to radical Islam was made by a Ute. The coug fans were thinking it, but we appreciate you vocalizing it.

Max/Ogletree/Riley brigade was working to make Riley the future starting QB and undermine Heaps while he was still at Skyline.

I still vividly remember Max Hall sounding all offended when someone asked him about Heaps pre-2009 after he committed and he said something to the effect of, "this team is going to follow Riley Nelson, come hell or high water". Heaps had no idea what kind of team culture buzzsaw he was running into.

I feel pretty comfortable in thinking that without Anae getting run the whole Heaps thing doesn't come apart. And yes I understand the irony/coincidence/whatever the hell else of that statement.

Riley Nelson is a gamer and I am glad we don't have to play him again. He got hit hard again and again and jumped back up and kept taking it to Utah. he almost recreated one of Ute fans' worst nightmares with his 4th-and-12 completion.

I never felt comfortable with the Utes lead at the end of the 3rd quarter.

I know it's the MUSS and I appreciate their passion and the noise they make... but damn, act like you've been there before. Almost cost us the whole game.

Noah and I were saying the same thing, and then they used it for a TD run by Alisa. So we decided the problem was that they kept trying to use it to the short side of the field.

Utah did a good job of keeping RN on the move. Grace is right--when his feet are set and he can put his body into it, RN can put a little mustard on it. They didn't sack him tons, but they made sure he gave us a steady stream of ducks.

You may be 100% correct. really, you might be. and you know what? NO ONE CARES. Heaps is gone. he left. he is someone else's QB now.

If you think this stuff about the horribles committed on heaps is so interesting, start your own thread and talk about it with everyone who stops by and posts. Otherwise, you are looking very oddly obsessed, even if you are family.

There is no guarantee Heaps pans out as a world class QB at BYU, but the inability of the coaching staff and players to see that Heap's upside is light years beyond Riley's is worrisome. You have to invest more in that kind of talent than this organization did.

I wonder if he was ostracized because of the mission thing. Who knows everything that went on. Heaps is gone, that's water under the bridge, but the coaching staff that let that happen is still in place, and it is under-performing.
