    Against common opponents last year

    Hawaii
Kennedy: 8/12, 163 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, 6 carries for 20 yards, rating 235.8 (Kennedy didn't start the game)
    Nelson: 25/37, 363 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs, 7 carries for -3 yards, rating 176.7

    San Jose St
    Kennedy: 21/27, 255 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 9 carries for 29 yards, rating 174.1
    Nelson: 14/24, 219 yards, 3 TDs, 2 INTs, 9 carries for 62 yards, rating 159.6

    Idaho
    Kennedy: 13/18, 182 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 7 carries for 39 yards, rating 182.7
    Nelson: 4/7, 56 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 1 carry for 11 yards, rating 171.5

I only compared him to Kennedy, because I don't see how anyone can argue that Nelson is better than Keaton.

    • I am not sold on BYU this year, yet. But both Utah State and Utah, at least tonight, are downright shitty teams.

No 5 yard rule in college. Defender can jam (but not hold) at any time until the ball is in the air. Receiver cannot push at any time before or after the throw.

You are killing me, funk. You make it sound like Kennedy and Keaton killed it against a bunch of good teams last year. Nonsense. Why not just link to the entire set of stats?

That being said, the officials had absolutely nothing to do with the Utes loss. This game was lost when Whittingham made the dumbest move that a good coach has ever made when he hired a 25 year old shitty QB coach to be an offensive coordinator for a BCS conference team. There is a reason that there are no 25 year old OCs in major college football. There is a reason that every damn Pac-12 OC is more experienced than BJ. Maybe he will be good in 2-3 years, but he is so far in over his head right now it is ridiculous. This terrible offense is going to lose us a lot of games this year.

The good news going into next week is our defense is damn good. More good news that we are playing a QB that is substantially worse than the one we played against today. We are also going against a lesser RB than the one we played against today.

Bad news, I'm not sure our offense can score more than 6 points against BYU. Our defense is going to have to either put points on the board or hold BYU to 3 points.

This is going to be a really long season. In fact, is is going to be a really long 2-3 seasons why BJ gets this thing figured out. Either that or Whittingham can realize his mistake, demote him this offseason, and go hire a real BCS caliber offensive coordinator. Hiring BJ may be the undoing of Kyle Whittingham as Utah's head coach.

Oh and I like BJ. He was a lot of fun watching while he was playing at Utah. It isn't BJs fault that Whittingham made such an awful hire.
Lol! You should have a 24 hour rule for yourself! I think BJ will be fine with some more experience. You have a sample size of two whole games of play-calling. Take an alprazolam.

            • I found it surprising that the Utes were not able to run the ball better. I thought going in that it would be the difference. Was it the line, the play calls, good defense or what? I only saw the 4th quarter.

Line play was atrocious. No push at all

                • Traffic on I-15 was horrendous. Construction in Ogden had it down to one lane. I've been home for maybe 30 minutes.

I'll miss playing in Logan, but I forgot how cramped that stadium is, and they ran out of bottled water by halftime. Also, the USU students are obnoxious, but the fans were nothing but complimentary.

Utah has a lot of work to do.

                  • I hope we start Wilson soon because he's looked decent at the couple throws he's had, and no way is he worse than Wynn or Hays.

At least the expectations can be lowered and not be as disappointed, because this looks like a 7-5/8-4 team at best right now.

                      • Tough loss. Just landed in DFW and saw the highlights. BYU needs a strong Utah so I'm not cheering this loss.

                        That said, Utah sucks.

                        • Not necessarily a surprising outcome, as I think USU is much improved and I'm high on Keeton. Still, they did their best to give it away. A few random thoughts and musings.

                          1. Utes' OL has problems with the pass blocking thing. They got fooled pretty badly on a couple of normalish stunts and pressure from different angles.

                          2. I want to preface this by saying that I feel bad for Wynn. Based on the "hit" he took to hurt his shoulder (apparently) again, you have to think he just hit the injury lottery or something. Anyway, with that out of the way, he looked terrible. Hays looked better, and I'm wondering how much of that is because the offense may/may not have been different with Hays and therefore not something that USU would have prepared for. No clue. Obviously the coaching staff thought Wynn was best and they are professionals, so it's hard for me to say anything.

                          3. BJ is a nice guy. He's not a good OC.

                          4. I haven't rewatched any of the disputed calls, but any time you are relying on refs to bail you out you are going to lose games. It's not like they stole the game away from the Utes, who sucked for most of the night on offense for the all the reasons we've discussed. Bitching about the refs at all is stupid because they didn't lose the game, and they are the one thing you can't fix next week.

                          5. I hesitate to predict anything for next week based on this because history shows that the BYU-UofU game is not predictable and every time the Utes should get their ass handed to them they end up wearing our asses like hats instead.

                          6. mpfunk. Lol. I forgot how much I love reading your posts during football season. They make me smile.

                          • This cracked me up:
"It's devastating, because we lost to a team that's not even in the Pac-12," said running back John White, held to 96 yards on 27 carries. "To lose to Utah State is horrible."
