I haven't followed recruiting like I used to. Are we losing recruits that we used to get? If so, I would like 4 or 5 examples from this year's class. Or has the LDS pool been unusually shallow?Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostThis will make sort of the 3rd straight not so awesome year. And it appears to be that this will be the least awesomest of the not so awesome triumvirate.

I haven't followed it real closely either, but I think a little or both. There doesn't seem like there have been any really big names out there since the Heaps class.Originally posted by wapiti View PostI haven't followed recruiting like I used to. My other thing is that watching this star ranking stuff relative to the players that have actually produced for us over the last number of years, I just don't care that much anymore. When I start looking at the guys that have carried us, I see Hall, Beck, Hoff, Pitta, Harline, Brown, Williams, Unga, etc., etc. All of those guys weren't much as recruits. Of course there have been guys like Van Noy here and there, but it really seems like our teams have been built a lot on no-name recruits while more touted players didn't amount to much.So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I agree. However, I am concerned about the lack of depth on the O-line. Our recruiting base has always produced plenty of quality linemen. We also appear to be lacking play makers who will step up after Hoffman goes. I hope aren't headed back to the days of the vertically challenged Orem High WR.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostI haven't followed it real closely either, but I think a little or both. A couple of recruiting tidbits. First, I think this class will end up being better than the rankings, and dropping Laufasa was a good thing.
Jay Drew said that he has heard that Kearsley is still a BYU commit, but has told the staff he just wants to take his trips. Kearsley is also suppose to announce soon after his BYU trip.
I have also heard that Ragin III is pretty solid but he too wants to trip. He has developed a good relationship with Van Noy and likes that fact that he will be there for his freshman year.
Vaenuku a DE out of texas (LDS kid who is going on a mission straight out of high school) cancelled his Colorado trip this weekend and will be at BYU instead. He came to BYU's camp this summer and was upset that they didnt offer him on the spot. They were concerned about his grades, and since then his grades have gone up and he received his BYU offer. He has offers from a ton of BCS schools. BYU has a good chance with him.
Keegan Hicks alluded to BYU getting a big commit soon, but this was a while back. Recently he said they still have a good chance with this 'big' commit. Everybody assumes that he is talking about Lotulelei since he goes to school with him, and he probably is. I have no idea how good BYU's chances are with him but that is a good sign.
If BYU can get/keep the majority of these kids I still think it can be a pretty good class.

Never heard of this Vaenuku kid but he does have a load of offers. And he went to the same school as Ofa so that's got to be a good sign.
I just don't see any way Kearsley stays with BYU. He was even tweeting the other day about playing with the kid at OSU.So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I doubt Kearsley stays with BYU, but remember Trenton Trammel posted a pic on facebook in full UNM garb as well, so....Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostNever heard of this Vaenuku kid but he does have a load of offers. And he went to the same school as Ofa so that's got to be a good sign.

Yeah, Kearsley is gone.

Vaenuku is supposed to visit the U next weekend. His partner on the D-line (Sam Tevi) already committed to Utah and the Utes are recruiting his teammate from the O-line as well (Uhatafe - he looks like an ASU lean). Scalley is trying to bring in three from one school!Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostNever heard of this Vaenuku kid but he does have a load of offers. There was no way they were going to help this class.Originally posted by USU Coug View PostIt doesn't look like the coaching changes are going to help recruiting much. Pretty underwhelming class again.

http://byu.rivals.com/barrier_noentr...tid=&mid=&rid=Just last month BYU offered the 32nd ranked defensive end in the country in the class of 2013, and immediately found themselves among his top 4. 3* DE Gaius Vaenuku from Trinity High School in Euless, Texas has offers from six Pac-12 programs, four Big 12 programs, Missouri (SEC) and Michigan (Big 10). In his top 4 are Missouri, TCU, Utah and BYU.
Why didn't BYU offer the talented defensive end this last summer when he visited with Bronco Mendenhall in his office?
"He just went over what I wanted, and told me that BYU had that for me, but he told me that I needed to get my grades up before they could offer me."
Gaius did well this last semester in school and scored well on the ACT, so BYU offered and is instantly among his favorites.
"Yeah, I grew up a BYU fan."
"To be honest, I just thought they're a really great team, I haven't really seen much. This will be my very first time since sixth grade seeing the campus when I went to their camp. After this visit I'll let everybody know what I like and what I didn't like. I really don't know that much about BYU. All I really know is that they're a good team."
What does he know about the BYU Cougar football team? "They play together as a family, I've read a lot about their tradition over there. They're all about tradition"
Gaius' teammate and fellow defensive end at Trinity High School Sam Tevi has committed to the University of Utah, but he has friends and family at BYU as well. "I've got a couple friends, mostly family over there. Ross Apo is my uncle, Bronson and them are distant relatives I think."
Apo is his uncle? So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.
