Riley rides off in to the sunset.

What pisses me off is 2013.

We will have the following players as seniors on offense:

    Alisa
    Hoffman
    Quezada
    Falslev
    Holt
    Mahina
    Matthews
    Muehlman
    Houston Reynolds
    Richard Wilson
    Friel

On defense the seniors will be:

    KVN
    Hadley
    Sorenson
    Galea'i
    Beck
    Tuiloma

Other upperclassman: Apo, Stout, Pritchard, Bills, Fua, Johnson, Tushaus, Stringham, Yeck.

We are lined up for a huge season. Could potentially be the best ever at BYU. Especially if we had a junior qb with all the talent in the world coming off a redshirt year who hopefully figured it out.

Instead we have the following options:

Jason Munns- 280 pound senior QB that has looked atrocious in practice and spring ball and will have zero career pass attempts going in to the season.

Ammon Olsen- A guy who had zero D-1 offers before his mission. Only played 6 games at SUU in mop up time. He will be a redshirt sophomore.

Taysom Hill- A redshirt freshman QB who will be 3+ years removed from his last game action which was high school.

This is what pisses me off about the whole thing we are going to waste a huge opportunity. Especially with the 2013 schedule:

    9-7 Texas
    9-14 @ Hawai'i
    10-4 @ Utah State
    10-12 Georgia Tech
    10-19 @ Houston
    10-26 Boise State
    11-16 @ Notre Dame
    TBA Utah

For those of you saying he sucked, let him go, who cares we have Riley. It is not next year most of us are worried about.

This has been similar to my feeling for a while. The long-term plan is really screwed up and this Heaps problem is only one thing that points to overall program mismanagement.

I don't say: he sucked, let him go.

I say: Nelson's better, play Nelson. Try to make Heaps happy, but if he goes, he goes.

As for 2013: that's the distant future. Anything can happen. Guys get hurt, guys get kicked out for Honor Code, guys transfer, guys don't develop, new guys come in and do better, anything can happen and every time I have seen one of these two year projection things they never really pan out to what you think.

2013 QB situation: How reasonable is it for Hill to come in and back up Nelson next year and start as a sophomore? That's not a bad option.

Agreed. This should be a recruiting priority.

To add to this, I don't know about freshman, but I know there are always sophomores every year who have great seasons. Soph's in the past at BYU:
            good: Detmer, Walsh, Feterik, Hall
            bad: Beck, Heaps

If you scroll through this list, the Soph's seem to be pretty evenly distributed from top to bottom. I don't think having a Soph start is that big of a problem.

And it sucks because reading articles and Heaps statement I get the impression it happened because of the guy who single-handedly brought him here and last year he was basically saying he would die for. This whole thing about Doman and Heaps not having a meaningful relationship since the Utah game, possibly even the Texas game, is just mind-boggling to me considering their history.

I also think you can probably point to that moment as the big "what happened." Ox said it best, but somewhere along the way the narrative became that Heaps just sucked top-to-bottom. In my mind that's still just not true. Against Ole Miss, Texas and Utah, he was good-very good in at least half those games and was just lacking consistency of a full performance. To me that was totally understandable given (1) we had a coordinator who had never called a play and (2) we couldn't run the ball against a HS team at that point.

It wasn't until UCF and Utah St. that he truly sucked, where he looked completely and utterly confused with an absolute deer-in-headlights expression on his face. I know I asked several times what could have happened from the Utah game to the next week. I speculated that he was probably shaken by the whole fan reaction (chanting for Riley and what not), but at this point I'm guessing that whatever happened between him and Doman was probably the biggest factor.

Such a shame that everyone was so short-sighted in this thing. Bronco, Doman, Heaps, the whole lot of them.

I agree. Heaps screwed himself and maybe BYU in the process and made a poor choice to transfer. Guy was set up to have a great chance for huge success in 2013.

Things change a lot from year to year in college football. I'm not too worried about 2013.

munns is 280 lbs.? lol Whitt would have moved him to defensive tackle ages ago.

We can roll out of bed and win 8 games with that roster and schedule, but we have a chance to go to a BCS bowl and it won't happen with Taysom Hill as a redshirt freshman.

How did Ohio State do this year with a freshman qb? One that is much more talented than Taysom Hill.
Last season, Nebraska started out 10-1 with a RS Freshman QB in Taylor Martinez with the only loss to Texas. They got "jobbed" (now termed "Nebraskad") by officials in a 6-9 loss at Texas A&M. They still won the Big 12 North before losing 20-23 to a 12-win OU team in the CCG. Had Nebraska defeated OU, the Huskers would have gone to a BCS Bowl.

The point is that a team can make a BCS run with RS Freshman QB if there is enough talent surrounding him. Nebraska had a NFL RB (Roy Helu - Redskins) on offense but little else. BYU in 2013 will have better talent on offense than Nebraska in 2011. Not sure how Taysom Hill compares to Taylor Martinez but Martinez could best be described as servicable - he's no Ty Detmer or even Braxton Miller. Nebraska did have a very good defense in 2011 and that is probably just as important as having an excellent QB.

Isn't that part of the problem? The U could use a few more QBs.
