  • The real reason people are upset about Heaps transferring......

It has nothing to do with the Riley vs Jake debate. Look we know who Riley Nelson is he is an average quarterback but a great athlete. It is not always pretty but up to this point he has been very productive. I am fine rolling with Riley next year. We go 8-4 or 9-3 and end up in a very similar situation to this season. Riley rides off in to the sunset.

What pisses me off is 2013.

We will have the following players as seniors on offense:

    Alisa
    Hoffman
    Quezada
    Falslev
    Holt
    Mahina
    Matthews
    Muehlman
    Houston Reynolds
    Richard Wilson
    Friel

On defense the seniors will be:

    KVN
    Hadley
    Sorenson
    Galea'i
    Beck
    Tuiloma

Other upperclassman: Apo, Stout, Pritchard, Bills, Fua, Johnson, Tushaus, Stringham, Yeck.

We are lined up for a huge season. Could potentially be the best ever at BYU. Especially if we had a junior qb with all the talent in the world coming off a redshirt year who hopefully figured it out.

Instead we have the following options:

Jason Munns- 280 pound senior QB that has looked atrocious in practice and spring ball and will have zero career pass attempts going in to the season.

Ammon Olsen- A guy who had zero D-1 offers before his mission. Only played 6 games at SUU in mop up time. He will be a redshirt sophomore.

Taysom Hill- A redshirt freshman QB who will be 3+ years removed from his last game action which was high school.

This is what pisses me off about the whole thing we are going to waste a huge opportunity. Especially with the 2013 schedule:

    9-7 Texas
    9-14 @ Hawai'i
    10-4 @ Utah State
    10-12 Georgia Tech
    10-19 @ Houston
    10-26 Boise State
    11-16 @ Notre Dame
    TBA Utah

For those of you saying he sucked, let him go, who cares we have Riley. It is not next year most of us are worried about.

Tayson will redshirt this next season which will be Rileys senior season. Then he will be a redshirt freshman with zero career snaps in 2013.

This of course is a fine point. Maybe Taysom develops quickly after a spring, full season, and another spring in the program. Maybe Munns gets a wakeup call and starts to bring it.

If I was Bronco I'd try to find some insurance in the form of a JC QB.

But he will have had a season and two springs of practice. This sort of falls within the BYU roadmap for QB success. Sit, learn, and then go forth to kick butt.

I do not believe that the coaches have to redshirt him next season as he never enrolled at Stanford. Maybe I'm wrong on this.

Imo, it is not as grim as you make it out to be. He will have more than a year to learn and get up to speed. I am more optimistic that we could still have a great year..

Please name the last redshirt freshman QB to excel at BYU.

We can roll out of bed and win 8 games with that roster and schedule, but we have a chance to go to a BCS bowl and it won't happen with Taysom Hill as a redshirt freshman.

How did Ohio State do this year with a freshman qb? One that is much more talented than Taysom Hill.

is Kuresa going to be gone on a mission? NOt saying he's anything to get excited about... I am excited about Taysom, though. He seems like a grown up version of Nelson with an arm. Hopefully he can do work on the Scout team next year and really get that Doman/option offense down.

and that is the big masquerade. As long as we are playing shitty teams and are winning 8-10 games, there will be nothing to fix.

Yep. So if Taysom Hill is not a future Heisman trophy winner and 14 year NFL veteran we are in trouble because that is the type of talent it takes to win at that age.

                          Good point, CJ.

I really wish Heaps would have stuck around as it could have been a nice story of redemption and he has to sit out a year either way. Oh well.

Even if he is Ty Detmer, Ty Detmer wasnt good enough as a freshman to take any team to the BCS.

CJ.. You had me up until you tried to compare them to Ohio St. You can't even compare the turmoil, media circus and NCAA infractions committee breathing down the necks of Ohio St. and think this was not going to be a bad year..

FYI: Braxton Miller did very well and the last2 of those 3 loses were not on him nor the offense but on the defense.. He lead them back with late game TD's to take the lead in those games to watch the Defense blow it..

But the unknown factor is still there for 2013. You can predict a possible BCS run but it doesn't make it reality.. I still am optimistic with Hill..
