There is nothing like the excitement of a tailgate that can't start until four hours before kickoff.

I know I sound like a broken record here, but this is not an issue. First of all, the new dedicated tailgate lot (RV lot) allows tailgating as early as noon the day before the game.

The 4-hr policy applies to the Marriott Center lot where individuals can also set up. I'm pretty sure this is just language to limit liability for BYU and conserve resources for enforcement. There isn't anything to prevent you from setting up earlier than 4 hours before game time.

Additionally, the policy is pretty standard across college football. Wisconsin officially opens its tailgating lots 3 hours before the game. Same for Utah for all lots except the dedicated tailgating Guardsman lot. ASU policy is between 3 and 5 hours, depending on the lot.

I think those rules apply only to the Lot 20 tailgaters. The RV tailgating lot opens the day before the game.

BYU has also created a new football parking lot for RV and oversized vehicle parking. RV tailgating is allowed in this area. The lot is located at 2230 North 150 East, approximately three blocks north of LaVell Edwards Stadium on Canyon Road. Occupancy in this lot is limited and must be reserved through BYU Campus Scheduling at 801-422-3134. RV parking is available the day prior to the football game and patrons must be out of the lot the day following the event. There are no water or power hookups in this area. There is parking available in this lot for tow vehicles and RV guests.

No tent pegs or spikes. Again, common policy at most schools.

Campers are allowed in the tailgating lot. These rules apply only to the "regular" lot.

I don't know. I'm surprised they forgot to forbid "I need tickets" signs. They're so unsightly.

I saw this, as well. I think it is great that RVs can show up early. however, am I understanding correctly that this is a new dedicated lot? What was the rule last season for RVs? Could they show up and park a day before the game? Werent all the RVs down by the IPF? How did that work?

They need to funnel everyone to campus instead of moving people around from parking lot to parking lot. Campus on game day is dead.

Even with a conference title on the line, a team's last four games could be a snooze fest depending on how the schedule shakes out.

Yes, but people are just so anxious to bag on any attempt to improve things. If tailgating never succeeds at BYU it won't be because of the policies. I guarantee 90% of the people whining won't be participating in any tailgates anyway.

The IPF lot was where they used to route the RVs but it wasn't dedicated to tailgating. Others could use it as well. And there were problems with people coming in early while the lot was still being used for school parking or staying the next day.

This year, they are moving all the RVs (and those who want to tailgate with them!) to the lot across from the flag football fields. It solves parking conflicts since it will be a dedicated tailgate lot and it is closer to LES than the IPF lot.

I spent about half an hour googling tailgate policies for different schools when the new BYU "reminders" came out the other day. Most that I saw prohibit pegs or spikes. It's a dead issue at BYU anyway, as both tailgate lots are paved.

Anyway, the point is that tents and campers are not prohibited.

I go early to every game, therefore I have standing to complain.

These efforts are more like token gestures. The entire tailgating movement needs to be a coordinated effort, included a marketing campaign designed to build awareness and create excitement. If BYU is trying to change the culture, it is going to take a sustained effort, not one article released on a website.

Right now, what incentive do non-tailgaters have to change their ways and start tailgating? Because of this article?? What is BYU doing to make people want to tailgate?

If tailgating continues to not succeed at BYU, it will be precisely because of the policies.
