Well, personally I rate BYU a bit higher (30-35 in my own modeling) but Massey's 42 is easily within a reasonable confidence interval for me. If I were using my numbers, the mass of the distribution would be shifted a little bit (more mass at 8 wins and little less at 7 or less but it even my more optimistic view wouldn't look much different than that graph).Last edited by pelagius; 10-24-2013, 12:54 AM.

BYU's Bronco Mendenhall (38). He easily made the worst coaching decision of the last week, at Boise State. The Cougars scored to make it 7-6 with 3:37 left in the game and Mendenhall decided to go for a two-pointer and the win. There were two big problems with that decision: BYU was out of timeouts, which meant a final possession would be sheer panic; and even more importantly, overtime would favor the team with even a scantly competent kicker. Riley Stephenson hasn't been great for the Cougars (his miss at the end helped cost them the Utah game) but Boise's kicker situation is even worse. Playing for overtime would have been the smart call."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic

I'm surprised in all the discussion about the end of the Boise game that the decision to NOT kick an onside kick is pretty much ignored.Originally posted by Surfah View Post
To me, that was an even bigger no-brainer than kicking the PAT, ESPECIALLY following the failed 2 pt conversion.
Kicking it deep to Boise was essentially conceding the game wheras BYU had some time to move the ball had they recovered the onside kick.
Nobody is really even talking about not taking the onside kick.

It has been discussed. It compounded the problem (sealed the deal, actually) but is hardly the bigger no-brainer of the two. Compare the odds of making a PAT (95%? Just a guess) combined with the odds of winning in OT when your opponent has to score a TD vs. the odds of recovering an onside kick, and I'm almost certain that the math says that going for two was the bigger statistical gaffe.Originally posted by Portland Ute View PostI'm surprised in all the discussion about the end of the Boise game that the decision to NOT kick an onside kick is pretty much ignored.

Of course they should have tried an onside kick, but that deserves much less discussion than the 2-pt conversion decision, as the former is entirely derivative of the latter.Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

I think it was a game or two before that Stephenson set the BYU record for consecutive successful PAT.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostIt has been discussed. Remember last year when Iona Pritchard was a huge loss and was a Manase Tonga-like back and was gong to help our run game and pass protection? So, yeah, what happened to that?So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

In 1.5 qtrs as a starter, Taysom Hill is the second leading rusher on the team. Holy shitballs.

Given the offensive system we started with last year he should have contributed. I don't know if he would have but I think that the change in offensive style of play has made a back like him not as useful. So it might have been accurate last year whereas now he is a fellow without a home.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostRemember last year when Iona Pritchard was a huge loss and was a Manase Tonga-like back and was gong to help our run game and pass protection? I'd have to go back and look but IIRC he has been in on the first play from scrimmage in each game only to disappear the rest of the game. I'd sure like to see us line up in the i and smack the bows around a bit. I know I'm asking too much.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostRemember last year when Iona Pritchard was a huge loss and was a Manase Tonga-like back and was gong to help our run game and pass protection? Why has the runningback recruiting struggled? Or has the O-line been the cause? Perhaps a bit of both.Originally posted by Coach McGuirk View PostIn 1.5 qtrs as a starter, Taysom Hill is the second leading rusher on the team. Holy shitballs.
I do think Jamal Williams will be a quality D1 back, but then again I thought that Alisa would be much better than he is.
My belief is that there is more talent there than we are seeing. The issues at qb are creating a very unfortunate rippling affect.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

Am I wrong in believing our o line is a piece of shit? Why does the option get absolutely blown up in the backfield every. single. time.? We should be able to get a push of a few yards when we're running it up the gut on 1st down and the box isn't stacked, but we don't. Do we need to go back to having fat asses on the line just so we can manage a defensive line? Our RBs are big and fast, but it seems the only time we get positive yards downfield is when a play is blown up and LBs are dropped back into coverage and the QB takes off.

The OL it a complete piece of shit. And so is that option to the short side. But to me it seems like we've had more success with the option using Hill than Riley. Riley just doesn't seem to have a very good feel for it.So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Not to pick on one individual as many are deserving but if you ISO on Braden Hansen you will facepalm yourself at least a dozen times a game. He hasn't received the memo that moving your feet is a good thing, especially on the ridiculously called short-side option play.Originally posted by Commando View PostAm I wrong in believing our o line is a piece of shit?
