If I am Jake I make them promise to leave the redshirt in place. If they really think that Jake needs a redshirt to mature and prepare to be the best qb he can, they owe it to him to keep that promise.

Bronco will never promise that because of his win every battle mentality. Doman said this weekend that even if Jake were to RS, he'd still be the backup because he's too good not be involved in the everyday planning and preparation.

I agree that if I'm Jake that type of promise is what I'm asking for, but I don't think they'd give that to him.

They would have to prepare Lark as the backup. Heaps' redshirt could only be pulled if Riley's hurt and Lark sucks.

Where I don't agree, is that I do think the QB controversy could have been avoided had Bronco made a decision last year going into the season.

But you're working under the assumption that Heaps is destined to a be a great QB. You're sure of that. You're sure he wouldn't have sucked this year had he not had his confidence hurt last year or had the upper classmen quit on him or whatever. Your whole premise is that Heaps is the guy and Bronco f***ed him over. What if he does all that and we're 5-7 last year and we're 7-5 this year and Heaps sucks? oh i guess then it's because he doesn't have a QB coach?

That's my beef with Bronco. We're looking at a 3rd year of QB controversy in Provo. And even if Jake does stay and redshirts. How does Bronco and Doman not burn it when Riley goes down?

Its gonna happen and he will burn it unless Lark or Munns magically develops.

That would be ideal. Also, the type of injury Riley suffers next year would be a big variable. If it's a two-game thing like this year and we play San Jose St. and NMSU those two weeks, I think you're fine with Lark. If it's four games in and a season ender, or at least the majority of the remainder of the season, what do you do? Or what if it's game 1 and you've spent all this time prepping Lark to be the backup?

I think they would tell him they'd do everything the can not take the redshirt off, but I don't think they'd give him that guarantee. It just doesn't seem like Bronco's style.

I don't think that's Surfah's assumption. To me his assumption is not that he's destined to be great, it's that he could be great and the other guy is too limited reach that same echelon; so with scheduling being such that the results aren't going to vary drastically based on the performance of the QB, why not play for great?

And of course that's where I'd put myself as well. Though I realize it's a lot easier call from my vantage point as a fan on the couch -- not as easy when you're the coach.
