  • Paterno will retire at the end of the season.

    http://www.cbssports.com/collegefoot.../post/16048572

Hopefully the rest of those involved in the hush-hush at least lose their jobs as well, and Sandusky dies in a prison cell.

JoePa admits that in hindisght, he should have done more (something that seemed pretty obvious to most here). His resignation is a first step. The school president will likely follow suit, as well as the GA-now-assistant-coach.

JoePa has a lot of work to do to now get ready for his impending civil suit.

I have read a few reports that the number of victims coming forth has almost doubled from the original 8. Where is Sandusky? Has he posted bail or is he still in jail from his arrest this weekend? When will he face the media?

Interesting that Joe Pa gets to decide the timing of his retirement. He is still calling the shots.

I had heard on the radio that he posted 100,000 bail and was out, but that they took his passport or put him on a no fly list or something.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

I saw this on twitter, but it's funny-sad how Paterno didn't have the power to report the crime to the police, yet has the power to determine how long he keeps his job.

Well, PSU still has a big game to play this weekend against Nebraska. Wouldn't want to upset that delicate balance.

PSU has a hard time letting people go from the football program, apparently.

I don't buy that completely. It seems like all the moves by the admin from the very beginning of all of this have been done so to protect the interests and reputation of Penn St. Sending Joe-Pa out at the end of the season is part of that effort. They still care far more about Penn St. than they do the kids, Joe-Pa, or anyone else.

                  From Joe Pa's press release:

That's why I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address.
Looks like he made the decision and then informed them.

                    Bingo.
Meh, he gets to save some face this way...but if you don't think his hand was forced here...

                    • The BoT needs to step in and tell Joe he had his chance to call the shots, but he's done now. If he had done the right thing years ago this would be largely forgotten and no one would blame him or the University.

Based on what he said at the student rally, and the fact that he coaches from a booth with no headset or any real connection with anyone on the field, I just have to question how lucid Paterno is at this point in his life...and I have my doubts that he is still "calling the shots." Does that mean that people there don't fear him? Certainly not, but right now they're trying to secure some long-term stability for that team, program, and school, and allowing Joe-Pa to call the shots seems counter intuitive to that effort. This thing will stain PSU for a long, long time...it's become bigger than Paterno.

                        • The way I see it, Penn State has one way to rebound from this. Immediately let go anyone involved to show that this situation will not be tolerated and that the actions of a few dont represent the institution as a whole.

Allowing JoePa to coach the rest of the year and announce his resignation is a failure once again. They have no control at PSU and their lack of leadership through this process so far will forever haunt them.

Earlier this year, journalist Lisa Davis wrote "The Sins of Brother Curtis," a painful, difficult and necessary book on sexual predator Frank Curtis and his serial molestation of children over decades. Curtis was allowed to operate within the framework of the Mormon Church both through Penn State-like negligence and, more disturbingly, through the church's belief that placing him around children, despite his crimes, was essential to Curtis' religious salvation. As Curtis' deviations grew more pronounced, the Church of Latter-day Saints mirrored the response of Curley and Schultz and Spanier and Paterno. The church used its power to crush accountability, and its impulse was to protect the brand instead of the children. Many of those abuse victims ended up with lifelong drug and legal problems, their lives just a broken bottle on the side of the freeway, receiving about as much regard from the LDS.
I'm shocked! Utterly and completely shocked that the mormon church would do something like this.

Oh, come on, that was a cheap shot. God knows how many Catholic priests did the same thing and yet one of the singular instances of the LDS Church involved in this horrific circumstance warrants this kind of attention. I'm all for accountability, but there were THOUSANDS of children harmed by the blind eye the Catholics turned towards this issue. How many as it relates to the LDS CHurch? Dozens, maybe? Not that their pain is any less relevant, but the attention directed is unwarranted.
