  • JoePa: Get rich AND die tryin'

A published report says football coach Joe Paterno made plans to retire from Penn State the same month he testified before a grand jury in the Jerry Sandusky sex-abuse case, and all members of the board of trustees weren't informed of the new package before the scandal engulfed the university.

The New York Times says the amended contract included a $3 million career bonus if Paterno retired at the end of the 2011 season.

The story that Freeh tells is not the one that Paterno told when the story broke. Had he lived he may be facing perjury and obstruction of justice charges for lying to the grand jury.

Which makes your early posts in this thread all the more ridiculous than they were at the time.

Yeah, wasn't SU chewing us out for being to so quick to throw Paterno under the bus?

He took umbrage at the notion of this scandal sullying Paterno's reputation.

He also scoffed when I conjectured that many victims would testify.

Pretzel logic here. Paterno's lies are the crucial context of my original comments.

I took Paterno's word for it which is what any civil libertarian should do. I was offended by your rush to judgment based on a sport's reporter's column. Since then your continuous agenda has been to minimize USC's malfeasance by comparison. Disgraceful.

(No victims have been able to implicate Paterno per se.)

I won't apologize for believing Paterno's lies until the process played itself out. Now, the evidence is in, the judgements have been rendered, it's time for condemnations. (Nor do I gree that Penn State's crimes have anything to do with USC's malfeasance.)

I didn't know judgments have been rendered. What was the outcome? What happened to PSU's president, AD, Paterno's estate, etc?

The only difference between day 1 and now is....well....really not much. It was obvious when PSU put all those guys out to pasture that they already knew what was coming.

You are now condemning these guys even though the "process" still hasn't played itself out. They haven't even been to trial yet.

                Lol. Judgments rendered.

Next time just listen to me and stay ahead of the curve.

After the Freeh report I need not presume Paterno and sycophantish Penn State adminstrators innocent and remain true to my civil libertarian ethic.

Paterno's family disputes the Freeh report, his son was on the staff and would have firsthand knowledge to dispute or at least clarify. The Freeh report has not yet been accepted as evidence in any trial. If I were you I would continue to reserve judgment on this. We just don't know and all of these men deserve the full benefit of the doubt until this entire thing has run its course.

                        • Statue stays.

The BoT needs to be removed next.

"The statue represents the good that Joe did. It doesn't represent the bad that he did."
You don't get to decide what the statue stands for Mr. BoT. Ask the 8 victims that suffered at the hands of Sandusky after Joe knew what that statue represents.

And it is continued comments like this why I am not persuaded that the football culture is not the university culture there. These guys still don't get it. I am not sure they ever will at this point. This is why the NCAA must do what the university won't do themselves.

                              Seriously. Read some of these,

The trustees "are hoping they can have more time pass and people will forget about it and then it won't come down," one trustee said.
"They don't get to tell us," the source said about members of the public clamoring for its removal. "This is a Penn State community decision."
Some alumni groups have continued to call for resignations of trustees, and one trustee said this about the statue: "We don't want to further upset the alumni."

"It has to stay up," said another trustee. "We have to let a number of months pass, and we'll address it again. But there is no way, no way. It's just not coming down."

Talk about not getting it at all. And you are right, there is no other culture except "We are Penn State".
