  • The offense mas many struggles. Nelson is just one of the many problems. The Oline is way overrated, the RBs are not very good. TEs are decimated with injury. The only bright spot on offense are are our WRs.

The Defense is good with the exception of our secondary which is par for the course for BYU.

BYU should be better at Oline, QB, and RB. These are positions that BYU can recruit and have success with. Right now there is hope at OL, but very little hope at RB and QB.

Next year will be another 8-9 win season before the bowl and I will be left with disappointing thoughts of what could have been if Bronco had managed the RB and QB position better with regard to recruitment and development...

I am glad we won the bowl game. However, Bowl games are supposed to build excitment and interest for the program. I have less excitement and optimism today than I had before the season began.

    • I rewatched the last drive.

Number 32's poor sportsmanship may have, in the end, helped BYU. He was slow to the line on the last two plays. The pass to the 3 yd line was his miss because he was out of position, having been slow to line up. He was somewhat slow on the fake spike, but the penultimate play of the drive was all him.

      Thank you, #32.

      • I recently finished watching the game, so I haven't read much of this thread (though I can guess what a lot of it says :-) ). Just a couple of comments, which have probably already been made many times.

Throughout most of the game, I was thinking that Riley was doing nothing to comfort BYU fans who are uneasy about losing Heaps. I thought he was pretty awful in the first half, spotty in the second half, but managed to pull it out in Riley fashion. I never feel comfortable with him in there, but he does seem to have more good luck than any QB I have ever seen. I don't know if this is a testament to his inner strength, or just a fluke which will be evened out next year.

KVN was KVN. In the 3rd quarter, Tulsa had a second down on BYU's 11 yeard line. Then KVN completely disrupted the backfield on 2nd down for a 6 yard loss, followed immediately by a KVN sack for another 12 yard loss. Suddenly a short field goal becomes a 46 yard attempt that is missed (by not all that much). As soon as that happened, I said to my dog, "We are going to win by 3 points. KVN just won the game for us". Feel free to contact my dog for verification of this.

He seems like an upstanding young man, and I wish him the best in his life, but I will not miss Eason all that much. If all opposing CBs we played were like Eason, Riley would lead the league in passing, as his patented "lob" pass would be completed 100% of the time. The receiver would stand there while the CB ran by him, looking around to try to figure out if there was a ball somewhere in the vicinity.

          • I wonder if there has ever been a group of fans as distraught as this over a ten-win season and last-second bowl victory? What an odd year.

I don't get it either. Five 10 win seasons in 6 years, in all likelihood finishing in the top 25 in five of six years, winning 3 more games than last year, coming up clutch winning 18 of their last 20 games decided by 7 points or less, winning in the last 15 seconds of a game they trailed almost the entire game.

More wins than 105 out of 120 teams over the last 5 years, better winning percentage against teams with a winning record than 104 of 120 teams over the last 5 years, 5 bowl wins out of 7 attempts (we were 7-15-1 before Bronco).

I wonder if Solich would have kept his job at Nebraska with 10 wins that season.

Riley Nelson is not a good QB, you can think Heaps sucks and he might very well suck, but that doesn't change the fact that Riley Nelson can and likely does suck as well. I have a hard time with the decision to mortgage your program's future because you think one sucky QB marginally sucks worse than the other.

If you have two choices of sucky QBs go with the underclassmen who has shown that he has the physical tools to figure it out at some point and had some pretty darn good success with your predecessor OC.
blahblahblahblahblah. I'm sick of your shit, man. Seriously. Done. Heaps could have had his spot back today if he was on the team, but he's gone. That's HIS decision, not any fan's, coaches, or poster on this or any other board. And with that, here's a site you might enjoy:

I'm not distraught at all, and enjoyed the season but I do understand some of angst. I lot of this seems to be derived from a preference for skewness. The events of the season seemed to have diminished the probability of a really favorable outcome (and vastly more enjoyable and enjoyable enough to make up for a few extra loses this year in terms of the way people express their preferences ) in the next couple of years. Personally, I don't think the right tail of the distribution was affected near as much as has been suggested by some people in this thread.

Also, it is fair to note that this is probably the worst double digit win team of the past decade if you look at overall performance. MOV computer model rating is going to be right around 40 for the overall season. This is lower then both the 2001 and 2008 seasons (both relatively poor double digit winners around 30).

On the other hand, if you look at just the Riley Nelson games, the rating is about 25.

I am not distraught over the season. That being said based on what I know right now I would rather have Utah's season and future. Maybe that is why I am not giddy about the season. I am afraid this is pretty much the ceiling for us. The positive about finally accepting this is that I don't get distruaght over a loss either.

This describes me pretty well. The win was fun, but I would have been over a loss in about 5 seconds. Also, I would trade this bowl win for a basketball win last night in a second. Up until a few months ago such an attitude would have been unimaginable for me.

I hate the 10 win measuring stick. 10 wins are not all created equal. I am dissapointed because a top recruit that has a lot of potential left, we got blown out by our very average rival, and we only had one win the entire regular season over a team above .500.
