Was that a worst case scenario for our QB situation?

I think the problem with this is jake apparently rips it apart in practice, so I'm not sure where more practice reps gets him. His problem right now is clearly getting it to translate to games. But maybe just a year of maturity helps? I don't know.So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I think if Heaps has a kid he will start get his act together. Once he starts realizing that he has to put some food on the table he will start taking things seriously and become a man in the pocket. Or will just give up and become Blaine Fowler, not a bad back up option.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostI think the problem with this is jake apparently rips it apart in practice, so I'm not sure where more practice reps gets him. I'm guessing there have been plenty. According to what I've read lark and munns have been far from it.Originally posted by camleish View Posthas there ever been a byu quarterback who hasn't been lights out in practice though?
But of course everyone looks better in practice, so I guess it's a matter of degree. There was a lot of talk that his fall camp was comparable to becks sr year. And he reportedly dusted every other qb in practice again this week. Will a redshirt help here? I'm not sure what to think. So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Not sure. I am not sure he is hurt. He got hurt in the Utah game last year. He hasn't been been willing to sit in the pocket since. It might be in his head, or he might still have some lingering effects of that rib injury. He plays like he is scared to get hit. I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't healthy. Pain makes cowards out of a lot of people.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostJake? BYU looked like a classic BYU team in the first half. Nelson ran an efficient offense taking what the defense gave him. The deep ball to MJ was underthrown but it was still better than what we've been getting out of Heaps. From my view in the cheap seats it looked like Nelson was more accurate than the pundits thought he could be. Three touchdowns for a BYU QB this year is nothing to sneeze at. Neither is a QB rating north of 170.
The two interceptions in the second half weren't good. Also BYU went conservative which is the correct thing to do when your run game is working and you have a lead.
I give Nelson a solid B on the night. He has things to work on but in the end he was effective. He also made throws many didn't think he could make. There is just enough fodder for the Heaps apologists (I'm looking at you Hsaru and your monster football IQ) to bitch and moan.
Nelson will start next week and it will be interesting to see him play against a low end PAC team who played tough this week. In the meantime Jake needs to keep his helmet at the ready and work on his deficiencies in practice. Nelson is going to get knocked silly one of these games and Heaps will get another chance.

BYU's classic offense is blowing the team off the ball every down in the run game and opening gigantic holes in the screen pass game against a severely outmanned defense?Originally posted by Shaka View PostBYU looked like a classic BYU team in the first half. I loved some of the throws Riley made in the first half, but the majority of our offense was an offense you run when you know you completely outman the other team and didn't give me any reason to have optimism for TCU(and Oregon St for that matter).
A power run game and screen pass offense might be the answer to make sure we beat all of the dregs of the WAC but it does nothing for building this team to be able to compete against good teams this year and especially next year.

I agree with everything in your post but this. He put the ball on the ground on the 3 yard line. Two interception and a possible pick six if the Linebackers could have hung on to it. I would give him a solid C. I'm not sure what the hell is wrong with this team in the second half of every game.Originally posted by Shaka View PostBYU looked like a classic BYU team in the first half. I think the possible pick 6 by the linebacker was actually Kariya losing his footing. Until I can watch the replay I'm not going to hang that one on Riley.Originally posted by USU Coug View PostI agree with everything in your post but this. I like the fact that he had a positive touchdown to interception ratio. A runner like Riley is going to fumble every so often. I like how he bounced back from it. Maybe a B- would have been a better grade. I'm hopeful when comparing Riley's play today against what happened in the first five games. The fumble was unfortunate and the interceptions stupid. However those are things that can be cleaned up as Riley progresses.

For the record Riley himself agrees with you. It also sounds like he knows what he needs to work on:Originally posted by USU Coug View PostI agree with everything in your post but this. "Pretty average. About a C," Nelson said when asked to assess his performance. "Three turnovers in the red zone was bad news, and all three were my fault. [I need] better ball security on the fumble."
