Knowing that stat I thought it was game over after that happened. The worst part about that for me was shortly after that blocked punt and while we were down 14-3 I had to go coach my daughters soccer game. So I had to pause it, go try and put on a happy/encouraging face and coach/cheer on a bunch of 6 year old girls playing soccer.(The girls kicked ass by the way, won 10-3)

Both wins were good yesterday. BYU dominated a Pac - 12 team at their place. That game wasn't as close as the score. And Utah physically destroyed a Big East team on the road. Holding a team to 120 yards of total offense is pretty damn impressive.

With the issues that Utah has had getting punts blocked or altered, I am puzzled that Whit, knowing how important it is, has done little to fix the problem.

He knows the stats. He knows we have a problem. What's the hold up in rectifying it?

This was about as good a game as could be played in crappy weather. The game plan going in was

          1. Pound the rock,
          2. throw the ball to extend drives
          3. Not taking risks with the passing game
          4. dominate the opposing running game

Remove the two special team disasters, and the sequence after we recovered the fumble deep (false start, unnecessary sack, personal foul, dropped punt) and this one is a laugher

I worry about redzone offense, but we are killing ourselves with false start penalties. We had the ball 1st and goal at the 4 in the first possession. In that circumstance you put it on the Oline to get it done. But a false start on Brenner backs it up and changes the dynamic. We also had false starts on 2 other possessions inside the 20.

isn't this the series where Cullen basically tackled JW4 preventing a first and goal?

                • A few thoughts:

I don't care how ugly the game was. I'm just happy that the Utes got the win. Of course, I love defensive struggles, so this was a game of beauty for me.

Cullen is obviously a problem, but can the Utes afford to sit him? Who is his backup and if he started, would he be better?

I was reading the article in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and it mentioned that the Pitt QBs completed twice the number of passes to receivers as Hays completed to himself. IOW, Pitt receivers had 2 receptions yesterday. With that kind of incompetence, it was really easy for the Utes to focus on stopping Graham.

If it was up to me, every member of special teams, save Peterson, would run til they puke after each practice this week. Including the coach.

                      Nice honor for Shelby.

                        Hooray! That was me.

I'm optimistic about Hays. I was sold when he caught his own pass and got positive yards.

                        • It was fun to get to see the Utes play out on the east coast. I suspect it'll be a while before we see that again.

The Pitt fans were nice. It was kind of funny because you don't find many fans of teams up 14-3 booing the hell out of their QB.

UD and I also had the two old guys from the muppets sitting behind us. One was probably in his 60s and the other guy was his dad. The older of the two was listening to the game on the radio and was a full play behind the action...didn't stop him from commenting though. Toward the end of the game he said to UD and I..."your running back, White the eyyyyyyeeeeeee vvvvvvvv, he's good he's got 171 yards." They also talked about the top 10 grossing male actors. "This one will surprise you...Will Smith, from the Black Man movie."

As for the game, the wind was whipping around there and it limited our already limited QB. I'd still like to see them run Langi in between the tackles and not try to run sweeps with him. I was also glad to see Kenneth Scott get in the game, but I'm still puzzled as to why we think that McNabb at 5'6 is a good option for the redzone when you have several big and tall receivers.

The D looked solid, and I'm sure that they appreciated not having to be on the field the whole game. It looks like Eric Rowe is coming into his own a little bit, which is nice to see. He and Blechen could be a hell of a duo back there.

All in all it was a great time!

One of my favorites things about the game was that PITT's motto this year is "high octane offense". Everytime they punted someone would inevitably say "woohoo high octane baby!" or "wow how about that high octane offense?!?". That made for a fun time.

BTW... I scalped 50 yard line tickets 30 rows up for $30. It was a great day for football.

We were down on the 25 behind the Ute bench on the side where none of the action occured. About 10 rows up.
