Who gives us a better chance to win? You can speculate til you're blue in the face on what schooks would take JH/RN, but those discussions are not pertinent to the question at hand. We lose nothing by giving heaps a rest. If he bolts bc of it, then he's nit a competitor, and I'd not shed a tear.

Hopefully, his competitive juices start to flow now that he's been shown up.

After viewing this season's game film I highly doubt it. Even if he could catch on with a BCS team (most likely not a very good one) he'd be buried on the depth chart.

Heaps best option is to stick it out. If he does choose to leave it's not like we do not have options. Taysom Hill is very promising.
This. I have heard great things about this kid. Admittedly not enough to even know if he's more of a Nelson type athlete or pocket passer but to be a Stanford transfer is saying something.

I think there are BCS teams that would take a shot. Especially if their ego's tell them the kid blew it by going to BYU in the first place. Bring that talent on board, red shirt him and with proper coaching he could reach his potential.

If I was Heaps and his parents I would want to buy that myself. If I were the Utes, I would take a shot.

Also, if I was Tayson Hill and hearing how in love Doman is with the running, gutsy, no pro type QB, I might be rethinking my decision.

We have two highly recruited pro-style QB's in Lark and Munns and yet they are behind Nelson. BYU isn't looking to attractive as a site to land for a very talented raw young QB. Heaps was better before he got there.

He's a prototypical QB who happens to be quite fast for the position. He has a bunch of upside. Personally I'd like to shelve him with a redshirt year and figure out what's wrong with Heaps.

Here is where the coaches start earning their salary. Given the current personnel, the only way we are going to be successful over the 1.5 to 2.5 seasons is for them to rehabilitate Jake.

The other alternative to hand the reigns to a QB that has no prayer of being a successful passer who will get chewed up and spit out by the likes of Boise, Utah, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame on the road next year.

We have neither the RBs, OL or the defense to completely eschew the pass game. You can either have a spunky QB that fans and teammates like who can't throw his way through a wet paper bag and BYU is staring at 6-6 in the face, or you coach your butts off with an extremely talented QB to get his head right and give yourself at least a chance of winning in the long term.

If 2011 means that much to you, then go ahead and mortgage your future for the Armed Forces Bowl or whatever the hell it is this year. No one at ESPN is really going to care at this point because there are no more marquis matchups until 2012 as TCU has their own issues and we are serving as programming filler for late Friday nights going up against the likes of Nick at Nite, Conan and Spike TV's 2,749th rebroadcast of the Star Wars Trilogy.

I'm not sure Heaps was better before he got here. That was high school and there is a huge gap between that and his current situation.

I'm confident the coaching problems will be fixed. I feel Doman has become progressively better. As I've stated before I think we need a dedicated QB coach. Hopefully that is addressed in the offseason.

Yes that would be ideal. What year will he be next year?

I guess what I meant was he looked a lot better the end of last year than he does this year. What has changed. The only thing I can think of is his OC.

                    • GV,

How will the future be mortgaged? He bolts? Missing 1/2 a season to get Heaps head right is an investment, IMO. Next year, RN is gone and a prepared, talented Heaps can lead the Cougars.

You're overthinking it. Riley proved he was better than Heaps is right now, so Riley should start. If he plays good against these crappy teams then the game should be well in hand and you can put Heaps back in to get his reps. If Riley sucks then try Heaps again, or Lark, or Munns. Where is it written that Heaps is to be "BYU's Quarterback" for the next three years?

RN will be here next year. He is a junior.

Level of competition is different my friend. The last half of last year's season was full of easy competition. These paper tigers made our boy overconfident enough that he didn't see the need to improve in the offseason. Fast forward to this year and he is looking bad. I think all of us know he will look significantly better the next few games because they are all crappers. However beating up on lousy teams isn't necessarily going to fix what ails him. His problems right now are deep.

Did he get a medical rs last year?

My bad. Even still, if he gives us the best chance to win, what is the harm?
