Riley got the job done today, so I'm one third of the way towards feeling more comfortable for next season.
    And bowl.

Too bad we're not in the Pac. 1-1 and still in the Rose Bowl hunt.

I purposely omitted bowl because I'm not confident that the Armed Forces Bowl is going to pair us with a good team. Chances are high that it will not be a ranked team and it could quite possibly be a 6 win CUSA team. Jake looked great against UTEP.

            • Riley is still looking like a kid with not a lot of upside, but dang he's fun to watch.
I think, perhaps, the only person who hates BYU fans more than ute fans hate BYU fans, is Bronco Mendenhall.

He definitely is and I have come to think you need a QB like him to make up for deficiencies BYU has. His running and scrambling keeps the defense on edge and they can't just focus on the RB or receivers breaking free. They have to cover a lot longer.

A QB like Heaps fits better in a USC type team. Riley fits more with a BYU.

                • I see no difference between Max Hall's arm and Riley's arm right now. I would also put his arm on the same level as both QB's who beat us and two that should have (UCF/USU). I'll say it again--arm strength is overrated in college; mobility and playmaking ability are not.

I'm anxious to see him against TCU. That will answer a lot of questions.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

Maybe theoretically, but how are you going to consistently recruit those knids of QBs?

The reason BYU has gone for precision passers and precision routes customarily is those are the kinds of QBs and players BYU can customarily recruit.

Not saying that we're wrong to run the Riley Nelson offense, but its not something we are going to be able to keep up long term.

I think BYU can do it with a pocket qb who has a strong enough arm to stretch the field from sideline to sideline and can complete the mid range passing game as well. I think Heaps has that potential, I have seen it at times. However, he clearly has some mental challenges that he needs to overcome and he will not likely get the opportunity to be the man again until the 2013 season. Where BYU runs into problems is if they have a pocket qb with the armstrength of Riley. If the qb doesn't have the ability to stretch the field sideline to sideline and out to 20 yards past the LOS with laser like ropes, then he needs to be a playmaker to compensate for the fact that the wr's are going to historically struggle to get open.

However, you predicted Oregon State would get their fist win against BYU and even if the Beavers had whipped the Cougars on Saturday you still would have been wrong!

Doman needs to be smart enough to tweak his offense to the QB talent he can recruit, not vice versa. I think he is. He was tweaking the offense to make it work for Heaps until Heaps put himself on the bench.

Uh...did you miss that pick 6. It's not that he waited to long to throw the ball. It's that the ball took 3 seconds too long to arrive at its destination.

Taysom Hill is a similar type of qb to Riley, except he is a bit bigger and likely faster. I don't know if he is as good and he did not quite have the HS numbers that Riley had. However, from what I have seen I think Taysom is a better natural athlete or at least as good an athlete but with his increased size he is a better NCAA prospect.

However, I think BYU goes back to Heaps after Riley for two years. Unless Jake transfers, I expect he will RS next year unless Riley gets hurt in Septemeber.

I think it is based upon a pocket qb and then it is tweaked for the playmaker. Most of Riley's rushes are taking off when nobody is open or planned qb draws. There isn't significant option type of qb runs.

Uh...Max Hall had similar pick six's in his career. The point if valid.
