If you'd asked me preseason if I would be happy with 4-2 at this point I would have unequivocally said yes. We are a horrible 4-2 team.
Alisa seems like a good power runner - maybe even more effective than quezada or kariya. Why is he only now being used? He could have been handy for the cougs in the Utah and Texas games.

Riley Nelson is definitely a gutsy football player. He has a decent arm but it is inconsistent. The TD pass to Jacobson was well thrown. The pick in the 3rd quarter was not but it could have been a TD pass if placed properly.

The crowd seemed bored after halftime. Kind of like a big yawn. Maybe because of the late time but most likely because it was just a boring second half. Cougs needed to put sj away and didn't.

I think 4-2 is a gold record. Still some cupcakes to go, although Oregon state has some good athletes. Riley Nelson is going to be tested this weekend against a quicker and more physical defense. Should be an interesting matchup to watch.

Switched over to FoxSports to catch the end of the late game. UCLA/Washington St. We'd have our hands full with either of these teams in our current state.

So what's the feeling? Riley gets the start against the mighty Beavers?

Riley gets the start. Close game. BYU wins. Oregon St. then beats Utah the next week.

Utah is still better than BYU

Nelson was put in the dream situation for a QB all night, 2nd and 2 almsost every set of downs and this is what we come out with? We were better by leaps and bounds at every single position on the offense vs their defense, this should've been a CSU/UTEP/UNLV type blowout from last year.

Very boring game. I drove to Provo for this?

Anyone know why Van Noy never starts?

Yeah this game sucked. The running game never got off the ground, our quarterback only threw three touchdown passes, we didn't punt, and our kicker hit all of his field goals. When judged against the previous epic performances this season we should hang our heads in shame and forfeit every game for the rest of the season.

Having a hard time giving a crap. Crappy team with a crappy win moves on with a crappy schedule. BYU football is dead. Good job Cecil.

Our run game was DOMINANT, I made that pretty clear in my post with the 2nd and 2 remark. With the absolute dominance of the run game with the mismatch of our OL against their front 7 this should've been another CSU/UNLV/UTEP type blowout from last year.

The run game we had tonight and the pass protection is every QB's dream situation and should lead to absolutely gaudy performances. Some of the terrible decisions Riley made in the 2nd half with throwing the ball up for grabs while he's getting sacked and the near pick six that hit a LBer in the chest on a screen pass just gives me nightmares to what Texas' athletes would have done with those type of throws instead of the JC type players on SJSU.

What are we building towards? This is just heartbreaking as a BYU fan to see what is going on with the program with Independence and our current football program that does not look like it is building towards anything worthwhile anytime soon.

You should judge Jake by those standards. This is Nelson's first start in over a year. Yes there were some problems but as a whole he played a decent game and showed glimpses of brilliance. He will get another week of starter reps and we will see if he can improve a couple of things. For this week he definitely should be cut some slack.

Shaka I respect your football knowledge, I know you know a lot more about football than I do. Tell me honestly what you think of a primarily screen pass and power run game and its ability to have ANY success against a team with athletes like TCU? And don't say something like well Heaps would suck against TCU, that isn't the question. Nothing about this game and gameplan gave me a sliver of hope for a gameplan that can be even moderately successful against TCU.

We made pass plays downfield. It wasn't perfect but it was good enough to know we are progressing in that regard. We also found out that stacking the box isn't necessarily going to beat Riley. As we saw today he can make medium throws and strech the defense a bit. Being able to buy time with his feet is an added bonus. If we can keep our run game progressing with the emergence of Alisa and get Riley to clean a couple things up we can give TCU a run. In general I'm happy because tonight we had a glimpse of how this offense can be.

BYU is far from perfect right now but the pieces are starting to come together a bit. Having the offense gel under Riley will help Heaps when he gets his shot. The OSU game will be interesting to see if we can continue to make strides.

At this moment I'm more worried about the D.

The effectiveness of stacking the box doesn't mean much when you are getting blown off the ball by the OL in the run game every down regardless. So you are stacking the box, but still allowing the run game to set up continual 2nd and 2s and trying to play coverage with terrible secondary personnel with no help from the safeties and the opposing team has perfect down and distances that allows either pass or run on every 2nd and 3rd down. That is the definition of a QB's dream situation, didn't turn into that though.

you are vastly overstating the run blocking capabilities of this ol
