That's not totally true. In 2008 they started out 6-0 before they faced a good team. In 2009 they started 2-1 before getting blown out in the home opener against FSU. Bronco's teams have a tough time against the the good out of conference competition and then pound the crappy teams in conference. For a few years there, they thought about trying the Hawaii method of getting to the BCS by playing crappy teams. Unfortunately TCU and Utah got better and the plan failed.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View PostSo apparently in the past 7 seasons, Bronco has started 1-2 five times. whoops.

Competition plain and simple. Steady Eddie has proven that he can coach his team to beat the teams that on paper are inferior to his own but seldom coach's them up a level. There are exceptions but the running theme in starting 1-2 in five out of seven seasons is the competition step up.Originally posted by Coach McGuirk View PostYes, we suck out of the gate, whether that is do to competition, preparation or both.
Independence will fix all that ails us though.

Yep. Bronco's play not to lose philosophy tends to fail against good teams. To beat good teams consistently, you have to play to win. Like Boise.Originally posted by Blueintheface View PostCompetition plain and simple. It also validates Whittingham's decision not to recruit Hague.Originally posted by WashingtonCoug View PostThe only positive from that quote is seeing Senior in front of Travis Uale. Our RB's are bad, but it doesn't even come close to how bad Uale is. The fact that the only other player to give him a run for the job was Hague in his first year trying to play the position since high school, make me scared for the future of the defensive backfield. As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

I think this is true. We're a bellweather team. We beat bad teams and lose to good ones. Steady as she goes. Exceptions may be the Oklahoma game (not the best Oklahoma team ever, but still a good win), and the 2006 TCU game (also not a fantastic TCU geam, but also pretty good) plus maybe a couple of bad losses here and there that I choose not to remember.Originally posted by Blueintheface View PostCompetition plain and simple. This is probably Bronco imprinting his personality on the team. Consistency, control, minimize risk-taking, should give you that kind of result.
It also would mean that BYU does pretty well holding leads but has trouble if it gets behind, which is pretty true of the Bronco era.I think, perhaps, the only person who hates BYU fans more than ute fans hate BYU fans, is Bronco Mendenhall.

That 2006 TCU team finished 11-2 and ranked in the top 25. You might be thinking of the 2007 TCU team, which went 8-5. 2009 Utah (10-3) would be another exception.Originally posted by Cougarmandias View PostI think this is true. We're a bellweather team. Typically, it's not so much about BYU beating bad teams and losing to good teams, it's BYU crushing bad teams, beating good teams now and then, but getting crushed by very good/great teams.
What makes Saturday so disheartening for BYU fans, is that the timing of the game takes away any immediate idea as to how good Utah is, and that jacks with the whole "consistency" model Bronco likes to put on the program. Because even this Ute fan isn't ready to put this team on par with the 2004/08 teams -- not by a long shot. So either Utah really is that good, or Bronco's model of steady-as-she goes has taken a huge hit. I'm not sure what I would believe if I were a BYU fan.

Bronco actually said in the post game that he didn't hear the BYU fans when Wrubell gave him a softball on it and a chance to give a shout out to the fans. He took the opportunity instead to comment on how loud the OSU fans were.

I've been a Bronco advocate for most of the past five years but his lack of rapport with the people who are paying his salary and sustaining the program is getting so, so tired.
Someone needs to get in his face about this. I nominate BYU71. Or maybe cougjunkie.Ute-ī sunt fīmī differtī
