My thoughts.
The game played out similar to how I expected. BYUs defense is puzzling to me, they have legit NFL talent with Fangupo, KVN, Pendleton, Manumaleuna, and maybe even Joe Sampson. Then they have guys that do not start on 1-AA teams like Uale, Eason, Austen Jorgensen, and Jordan RIchardson. I think besides the obvious glaring weaknesses this is collectively the most talent BYU has had on defense since 1996. I thought we showed our speed tonight taking away the edges for the most part. I said before the game we would need to rely on Uale to make plays and both of the QBs touchdowns came on him allowing the quarterback to break containment. Also two of their long passes came on his side of the field. Is Hague really that bad? I would rather see Sampson at safety with Preston Hadley and Jordan Johnson at corner.
Heaps was off tonight and made some poor throws, on the flip side his level of difficulty on the plays being called and the routes being ran is about an 8 or a 9. Doman is not giving him much help. He also was not helped with all the drops tonight. His throw where Apo was concussed was on the money, and Hoffman dropped a few out routes. But no excuses he needs to step up.
Kariya and Juice both ran very hard, I came home and watched it again and Braden Hansen must be seriously injured he got his ass kicked that whole game. If I were BYU I run left behind Reynolds on every play.
I hate when we drop 8, get no pressure on the qb yet somehow he is able to find someone wide open, seems to happen way to often.
Special teams won us the game. Also on that last play of the game Muehlman actually put a great swim move on the tackle to get to Godfrey.
Ugly but no such thing as a bad win and to be honest this was great preparation for Utah st. as they run very similar schemes.*Banned*

The D-line deserves a lot of credit. Late in the game, I'm pretty sure they were gassed, but they had some big stops and put some pressure on UCF's QB.Originally posted by Sizzle View PostAlright a few thoughts combined into one post:
The good:
2) The defense: Held UCF to 100 yards under their average. Dug deep and came up with some big stops for the most part. I could also summarize this with just KVN because he was EVERYWHERE. Kid is a straight up stud and made some huge plays.
The bad:
Some other random thoughts:
1) Do we have a screen in our playbook? Get some pressure off the QB when they blitz by running a screen.
2) Kariya being healthy helps the running game. He isn't flashy but for a solid 3-4 yards a pop he is our best option.
I wasn't sold on KVN early last year, but dude is a straight up playmaker. Did you see how much ground he covered on his sack late in the Fourth? UCF's QB was a fast guy, and KVN ran him down and put him on his back.
Kariya was huge late in the game. North-South.
I liked the faster pace of the offense early last night.
WTH was up with the DBs last night, though?

I'd hesitate to call it arrogance without having more info, but I do think he probably underestimated the commitment of time and energy it would take to wear both hats.Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostYou guys criticizing Heaps are out to lunch. It is 95% Doman's fault. Heaps is a young QB who needs intensive coaching and mentoring and teaching. Right now he's getting squat during the game. Doman tells him "good luck" during warmups and doesn't get back to him until the press conference.
Doman was terribly arrogant for thinking he could coach the QBs and call the offense at the same time when he's never done any OC work before. Right now the offense is taking up all of his time, and the QBs are getting shit for mentoring on the field. After all of Heaps' turnovers, he gets nothing from the coaching staff. No coaching, no advice, no suggestions, no motivation.
Compare that to Utah. As much as I think Chow has jumped the shark, he's known for mentoring and coaching QBs. Plus, they've got Brian Johnson who does nothing but watch the QBs and focus on them. This year, they've managed to turn a mediocre QB with a duck arm into a decent general who's increasingly comfortable in the pocket. What does Heaps have? Nothing during the game, and it's worse now that Doman isnt even on the field.
It's not just Heaps, look at how poorly Riley Nelson is performing as well, on the few plays he's been in the game. The only down conversion he got is on the option, something he's been doing in his sleep his whole life.
Doman needs an assistant coach to take over the QBs right now. Heaps is paying the price for Doman's arrogance.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

Doman seemed to be working with him on the sidelines quite a bit in the first three games. It was only against UCF, since he moved to the box, that he wasn't able to do that. But I think we all wanted to see him make the move to the booth because the on-field approach wasn't working either.Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostYou guys criticizing Heaps are out to lunch. I thought in general Doman called a better game than the first 3. Good to see Marcus Mathews so significantly involved in the first half, we continued to pound the ball and it seemed like that was the most we have seen from Juice and North/South Kariya this entire season....not sure if it is because Doman is featuring them more or because Juice feels better, but in any event, we were mixing it up a bit more than usual.
There were some real bonehead calls....Nelson comes in to make a lousy pass (wtf).
However, if Hypes executes, BYU wins this by at least 2 more TDs. His throw that was picked in the first half was a bad throw. And he had JJ open into the EZ but threw too hard. That happened again a little later in the game...right play, open receiver to lead into the EZ, throw is way too long.
Sizzle asked whether we have screen plays in our playbook. I was wondering the same thing but part me wonders if there isn't a reason we aren't seeing many yet. Heaps does seem to lack the soft touch...or at least he has it but lost it for the time being. Does every throw he makes have to be a rocket?
As the schedule eases up, we will undoubtedly see Hypes improve but I'm not buying in this season. I want him to get better and think he has the tools, but im Not going to get overly excited about waxing New Mexico State. I'm already looking at the rest of the year as one long extended scrimmage to get this kid ready for next season...the B12 innauguration. If he can't work out some of his recurring issues (happy feet, accuracy, etc) with another 9 games of practice, BYU is in a little trouble.
Ps it has already been mentioned, but might be nice to run some tackling drills this week. We have issues wrapping up.
Game ball offense: Cody Hoffman
Game ball defense: K to the V N
Turd of the week: Travis Uale.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Why do we want Ty? All hail Tysman forever, but the last thing I want is another coach on this staff with zero experience.Originally posted by Viking View PostNah, Ty wants to go to Provo. If BYU accepts an invite to the B12, consider Ty hired."Nobody listens to Turtle."-Turtlesigpic
