Max played like garbage in 2008. But our defense that year is not remotely comparable to this year. Max would have easily won this game against Utah this year against Utah's backup safeties and a converted WR at corner. Especially when he had such a nasty D to fall back on.

And Max proved himself in many big games throughout his career. Riley has done nothing of the sort. Using that Utah 2008 game to try and justify any poor QB play is pathetic. Just as pathetic as comparing TCU 2011 defense to 2008-2010.

Nobody is using it to justify anything. You bring up Max and John a lot but when someone points out when they struggled you have nothing.

So can I defend Jackson Brown and Matt Berry and every crappy QB that ever plays in BYU's future using this same logic? Well some of our awesome QBs had some bad games so I'll give him a pass for this game.

Compare apples to apples. You complain about Riley a lot but how did Max do against the tough teams? How did he do against Tulsa, UCLA, and TCU? Max managed to beat the Utes while not playing well. His other signature win was against Oklahoma.

I'm not throwing Max under the bus but it's not like he or John ever completely dismantled top twenty teams.

AFA, FSU, TCU, Utah, Boise, Tulsa(with their below average D), Riley has had more than enough chances to show he can even play average against a solid D. Too bad he failed all of them.

Riley's style of play will always make him look better than he is against bad teams. Even against Wash St and Weber st type teams he relies way too much on scrambling around waiting for the defense to break down to find someone open. Or throwing up 500 balls and letting your nasty WR abuse non-d1 level d-backs. That just doesn't work against teams with a pulse on D.

I would have loved to see Riley make accurate throws consistently out of 3 and 5 step drops in the natural course of the offense when we play abysmal teams, but he just wouldn't do it...
