Hard to argue that JJ isn't a less effective back in heavy play-action sets unless its a stretch play than Juice who hits the hole decisively and they call more plays through the middle. And teams aren't going to bite on PA with Kariya, they are going to take their chances that their front 4/7 will be able to stop him without any secondary help.

These are guys who have proven they can put up offensive numbers and they have even one more season of experience now. The only difference is Doman, and that group that was putting up 30 ppg last year with Heaps starting, only scored 7 yesterday. That is on Doman.
And has absolutely nothing to do with quality of opponents. And all along, I thought you were one of the smarter ones SMR. You should know better.

Look, the offense left a lot to be desired yesterday. But it is one game. You forget that we're still starting a Sophmore at essentially all of the skill positions save McKayJake, right? You do realize that we went on the road and beat an SEC team, right? You also realize this is Domans first game calling all the plays with total control of the offense, right? I mean, did the offense underwhelm a bit? Probably. Are most of the mistakes easily fixable? I believe so. Most early drives were stalled by mistakes that are typical in a first game, false starts/illegal formations, a botched snap and a missed block. For the most part, when we put ourselves in manageable 3rd down situations, we converted. In 3rd down and 5 or less situations we converted 2/2 in the 1st quarter, 1/2 in the 2nd quarter 1/1 in the 3rd quarter and 1/1 in the 4th. So for the game we were 5/6 on 3rd and 5 or less. I'm happy with that. That will win you a lot of games if you can put yourself in those situations and convert.

In the 3rd/4th quarter we also had three straight 8-play 60+ yard drives that led to an INT on a smart defensive play (and something that Heaps can fix easily on film), a missed chip-shot FG and a TD pass. We moved the ball relatively easily when we needed to. The last drive we played conservatively because we wanted to chew up some clock and did so running off essentially 3 minutes of clock time in 6 plays.

Texas is going to be a tough opponent. I don't know that offensively we'll put up a whole lot more points or yards. But it isn't like we're awful offensively. We are very young across the board. Talented, but young. We'll get there, but be patient.

I think Juice without question has more upside than JJ. The fact of the matter is JJ has been reliable and consistent if not spectacular and makes plays. Basically you can't keep JJ off the field at the expense of other players. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing JJ more in the slot if Juice proves himself worthy of being the primary ball carrier.

Those shitty shotfun snaps hurt our timing in the first half. It was hard for Heaps to get in to a rythm when he spent the second of the play trying to corral a shitty snap and still keep his eyes downfield.

JJ is a difference maker in this offense. Is a a world beater? No, but he is consistent and is a threat both catching and running the ball. Without JJ yesterday we lose this game.

Wonder how long it takes before we see Doman up in the box calling plays?

My only real complaints are that I thought we would come out looking sharp based on all the news we've heard from camp, and I thought we'd be a little more up-tempo. Instead, they couldn't get the plays in on time, the snaps were awful, and the throws were off. All fixable things. I'm not too worried, but we're definitely not as good as we were led to believe. I think by the time our home schedule starts, we'll have a much more crisp offense.

I'm not ready to pass judgment on Doman after one road game in the SEC, and I have more to say a little later, but assuming the talent level on an offense is decent, execution issues (poor snaps, bad timing on passes, dropped balls, etc.) are usually the coaches fault.

If the shotgun snap was consistently poor it's not because the center can't snap; it's because his coach didn't give him enough reps to get it right. If the receiver/QB timing was off it's because the coach didnt give those guys enough reps on those plays.

In other words, playcalling is vastly overrated. Repping the same stuff over and over in practice is vastly underrated.

I agree, and I think that we'll likely look better next week. Let's not forget that we moved the ball very well between the twenties and just had difficulty putting it in when it counted.

Is it hard to argue that? How about if I go off the reservation and do so by pointing out that we started using play action last year with JJ as the primary back. I think Juice could be a better player but right now he isn't. I also don't think JJ is a bum.

Funk quit trying to troll you really are not good at it. Heaps was off in the first half he missed a lot of easy throws. I know you didn't watch the game so in reality you should not even be commenting. Hell you live 20 miles from your teams home stadium and don't even attend those games, so maybe defer to a few other ute fans that know what they are talking about.

Heaps had several shot gun snaps floated to him that he could not handle and one that was so bad he never got a grip and fumbled it. In the 2nd half it completely changed and so did Heaps efficiency. Was it hte main reason it was better in the 2nd half I doubt it but it was one of a few minor details that added up to a lot more production.

His PE was 168 in the 2nd half which would put him atop the country last year.

I have a feeling he'll look bad the first few games of the year but will hit his stride just in time for the meaty part of the schedule.
