Can someone explain to me how we're going to score any points offensively this game? The good news is that it appears Utes don't believe they'll score any points either. It's kind of bizarre how this game has generally speaking turned into a defensive battle over the past 15 years or so.

Something I've been thinking about is how bizarre it is to have Whittingham and Chow together.
Speaking a little egocentrically, BYU has been the cutting edge of developing the passing game and Utah has been the cutting edge of defenses devoted to stopping the passing game (ie beating BYU). BYU starting with the basic Lavell west coast offense and tinkering with spread, hurry up, Leach wide splits, etc. Whittingham adjusting with each move, tinkering with everything from bringing the house to dropping 10. Starting from the early 90's this chess game was all about Chow vs Whittingham. Even though Chow is long gone and Whitt is the head coach, I still largely think of this game as Chow's school vs Whittingam's school.

Since Meyer left it seems like Kyle has been searching for an offensive philosophy (and an OC). He must have been pretty happy to get Chow, warts and all. I hadn't thought of the history the two have as opponents in an ongoing chess match. Interesting.Originally posted by jay santos View PostSomething I've been thinking about is how bizarre it is to have Whittingham and Chow together.

It is those games that you expect to be defensive battles that turn into offensive shows and vice versa. While there is every reason to believe that the defenses will rule the day, it wouldn't surprise me if the offenses have a little bit of a break out.
It should be interesting to see what happens.
Chow's offense is known to be a little bit complicated. So I wonder how much to expect from Wynn this year (particularly at the beginning of the year) as Utah gets into it.
I'm still trying to figure out what Doman's offensive philosophy is. He talked about being unpredictable and keeping a defense on its heels. I don't know that I've seen much unpredictability as yet. I know they've played a couple of decent defenses and some good competition that would have me wanting to slow the game down. But I'm hoping that is just this year and just now at the beginning of the season. I'm hoping that at some point he is able to develop his offense into something that is all he advertised it to be.

I don't know that BYU has a wild cat package. I do know that they have a two-play package for Nelson (Utes look away), in this order.Originally posted by Shaka View PostThree words: Riley - Nelson - Wildcat
MG, I'm doing your job for you.
First play - a random 1st and 10. Nelson in the shotgun, speed option.
Second play - a random 2nd and 7ish. Nelson in the shotgun, zone read.

You're making a little too much sense here. And even worse, you're undercutting the prevailing Ute argument that doing the Haka is all about calling out the enemy and has nothing to do with building unity and brotherhood among teammates.Originally posted by Flattop View PostIt's also very cool when New Zealand and American troops do it together in Afghanistan to build Esprit de Corp.
Maybe you should edit your post to say that they only do it in front of a Taliban stronghold right before attacking as a means to call them out and challenge them to war.

They've got a third play. Nelson drops back to pass then runs the draw.Originally posted by drkennethnoisewater View PostI don't know that BYU has a wild cat package. I do know that they have a two-play package for Nelson (Utes look away), in this order.

Unpredictability requires balance. Balance does not require balance but it requires the capacity to move the ball through the air or on the ground. One can throw the ball all day, but to be unpredictable your opponent must respect your ability to run the ball.Originally posted by drkennethnoisewater View PostAhhh, yes. We haven't seen that yet this year, though. Maybe that's the unpredictability I keep hearing about.
BYU can't run the ball as well as they would like. As such they are losing their ability to be umpredictable. I think Doman is fine but next time I would recommend him to have the self-discipline to not stroke the fans flames of expectations by massaging their inner thighs telling them that their criticisms of Robert Anae were correct by promising to be more "unpredictable." Bronco's the one that fired Anae and hired Doman. It seems he was getting his inner thigh massaged as much as anyone.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostUnpredictability requires balance.
