College Football Live has been a great help for the football jones during summer months.

I anxiously await late June and the arrival of Phil Steele, then the eventual purchases of Athlon's, Sporting News and other CFB preview editions. I like memorizing schedules and knowing who is playing what week, thinking forward to which road game week I am going to be able to sit on the couch and enjoy 10-16 hours of great football, and which home game days I am going to miss out on other great games because I am at the stadium.

I have about 15 or so Duck games and 4-5 BYU games on the various DVRs around the house, I will often watch part or all of games at night with the boys or after they have gone to bed.

Of course the pinnacle of getting ready for the new college football season happened on Tuesday with the annual release of the newest EA NCAA game. Though harder with work and kids than it used to be, I will probably be through a season or 2 for both Oregon and BYU come the time our flight leaves for Dallas.

Oh, and did I ever mention I won the ESPN Gameday best sign contest? Or that I made Mandel's mailbag TWICE?

You were different than most the band folks. Most sit there and do anything other than watch the game.

I put in some serious work with my wife to buy her tolerance of my 12 hour college football viewing sessions on Saturdays (and a couple of hours on Thursday night). During the offseason/weekdays during the season I give her complete control of TV viewing. I have grown to tolerate a number of dreadful “reality” shows (Housewives of …, Jerseyliscious, fashion shows, design shows, etc.). When we go out to movies I give her say on what we see. Half of these are romcoms. When a game is on and she is around, I try to rub her feet or shoulders for a few minutes (operant conditioning technique I learned as an undergrad). All of this is worth it. She’ll spend half of the day shopping anyway. She tries to avoid being around me when BYU is playing. I get a bit too passionate for her liking.

Every year I spend July and August trying to convince myself that I will not have a rooting interest for any team besides BYU. My personality is to label teams as either “good” or “evil” and root accordingly. I’m jealous of people who can just sit back and enjoy a game without worrying about who wins or loses. During the first week of the season I think I’ve finally pulled it off but by the end of the second week I’ve found teams to hate. I guess that’s what I love about it. It’s a great release for me. However, I’m not the most fun person to watch games with.

I'm not exaggerating, either. Are there others here that went to that game and sat in the BYU section? For whatevr reason, BYu rarely sends it band on road games, if ever. So there was a guy set up at the bottom of the stands, I think he was on some sort of makeshift platform covered with some pop-up tent deal. And he had a keyboard with an amp. Most ridiculous thing I had ever seen BYU do with regards to the band. It reminded me of what it must have been like at an old ABA basketball game in the 70s.
I was in attendance along with my future wife and a couple siblings. That guy playing the Chicken Dance on his keyboard after the loss was one of the more embarassing moments of my BYU fanhood. If I remember correctly, it was keyboard guy, a bass guitar, and a drum kit representing us musically. It sounded like really bad latin pop. Nothing epitomizes the pageantry of college football like synthesized accordian music, right?

On a board full of rabid CFB fans, your level of obsession is disturbing.

FWIW if you own a PS3, I'd be willing to sell you my old copy for $10 (plus shipping).

lol! You are right, there was a bass guitar as well.

Sheesh, how awful. I don't recall seeing that combo at any other roadies. Hopefully it was just a failed experiment.

For those that went to the Jake Locker TD Toss game at UW, didn't they have a cover band playing at the pre game tailgate? I seem to recall a full band and some overzealous announcer giving away t shirts and asking trivia questions.

BYU needs to work on a few things.

I fondly remember the days when beating New Mexico was just as exciting as beating Miami. Nothing like the innocence of a young fan. Can't wait till my son is old enough to get into it.

The key in my family has been a sister-in-law that my wife totally hits it off with. They can chat, shop, gossip and do the relief society stuff all Saturday while my brother and I binge on football.

I would say that it was sad, but one of the prerequisites for my future wife when I was single was an understanding of, and an appreciation of, my love for football. I couldn't feel good marrying a woman who couldn't tolerate or preferably share my love of football.

Speaking of which, what is the verdict on flagpoles in front of the house? I think Im getting old because a flagpole is starting to sound cool to me. Esp on game day.
Last week a new flag pole went up at a home in the neighborhood. They did a very nice job with good landscaping around the pole out on the corner of a corner lot. Unfortunately, the first day a bright red U flag also went up on the pole.

Strangely, I drove past two days later and they had a US flag flying with a Oval Y flag below that.

Now they are flying a State of Utah (seal) flag. Not sure what is going on over there.

Along those lines I broke up with a girlfriend right before the season when I was in college so I could dedicate my time to watching football.

I painted a drum and feather on steelblue's lawn a few years ago. I want to do it again but he's a chicken.

I have a nice new red U flag to fly in front of my house on game days. When I'm not too lazy, I put up red and white Xmas lights for the U/Y game and keep them up until the bowl game or Xmas, whichever comes last.
