A girl from my ward was in the Cougar band and so was my nephew. They loved it but were members for only 1 year because of the time commitment. Is that typically the case?
Utah dropped its marching band in the early 70s. That was during a time when the university was (it seemed) trying to establish its counter-cultural bona fides. It came back under David Gardner and has slowly grown since then. I think it's up to 200 members now, but I admit I don't pay much attention to it.
I have a U flag I hang out on game days. We have neighbors who hang Nebraska, USC, Stanford, Oregon and UCLA flags. It's fun.Last edited by LA Ute; 07-14-2011, 01:47 PM.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

They have one and many of us wish they would use it less.Originally posted by Babs View PostBYU has a band? Why don't they use it?
Every Friday at five I tune into a station back home. At quitting time on fridays, this station plays the OU band playing Ohhhhklahoma. It's hokey as hell but I love it.
As far as college fb in general goes, On Saturdays I'll watch every game from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. while I pretend to fold laundry. I LOVE it.
Flash hates it.
I'm well known as a band hater. They are a good band but they never shut up.
Referee announcing an important penalty or ruling. Nope can't hear it because they struck up the band.
Scores being announced. Can't hear that either because the band has to play through every possibly break in the action.
I'd love our band if they had sense of timing and moved back to the south end zone.

Yeah, and as soon as I (we) graduated, they got good again, oh well, still had great times. There were still some fun games, and I enjoyed starting the B-Y-U-COUGARS chant a few times with my megaphone.Originally posted by Sizzle View PostSadly that was the pinnacle of his career and probably the highlight of BYU football while I was enrolled in school (mission kept me away during the 2000 and 2001 seasons).
That certainly sealed it, but the Cotton Bowl in '96 (season) really helped, along with the boink shot of '98.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View Postfilsdepac was, I think, only a mild BYU fan before he arrived on campus as a freshman, but after his first game, against UW (Home Run Hale for the winning TD!), he called home with a report that was off the charts in terms of excitement. He was hooked. For me, the Sheide-led win over ASU that led to BYU's first bowl game had a similar effect.
Some of my favorite game day memories are going to PAC's house and having Roundtable Pizza beforehand, since as soon as the game starts, my stomach prevents me from eating out of nervousness (UNLV games not included).

this is another pet peeve about the BYu band...lousy timing, you are correct.Originally posted by Shaka View PostThey have one and many of us wish they would use it less.

I remember going to the BYu/SC game at the Coliseum. BYU sent along this clown with a casio keyboard and an amp. He was cranking out midi-style muzak while Mike Williams was running all over the place in the 4th quarter.
Also, if people recall, our first score in that game was a sack on Matty in the EZ for a safety. The keyboard guy reflexively went into the ominous intro to Beethoven's 5th

It really isn'tOriginally posted by Babs View PostThat's hilarious.
I'm not exaggerating, either. Are there others here that went to that game and sat in the BYU section? For whatevr reason, BYu rarely sends it band on road games, if ever. So there was a guy set up at the bottom of the stands, I think he was on some sort of makeshift platform covered with some pop-up tent deal. And he had a keyboard with an amp. Most ridiculous thing I had ever seen BYU do with regards to the band. It reminded me of what it must have been like at an old ABA basketball game in the 70s.Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I think a lot of band members do drop playing the first year because of the time commitment. Our daughter played in the marching band and the pep band for four years while she was at BYU getting her degree in engineering. It was really hard for her this last year because the pep band traveled with the basketball team during the MWC/NCAA tournaments. The Jimmer and friends made it really hard on her but she said it was worth it. Our son is heading out on his mission soon so we won't know if he will play beyond his 1st year for another few years or so.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostA girl from my ward was in the Cougar band and so was my nephew. I love CFB so much, I stay up to watch Hawaii play!
This season is setting up to be a bittersweet one in the Sipi household. Sister Sipi has finally relented to junior's pestering and has accepted that he's ready for big boy football. To ease my wife's fears, I have joined the coaching staff of my son's jr pee wee team. Depending on how well the team performs, I may not get to attend a game until November; I haven't missed a season opener in 15 years. Most of the games I will catch this year will be via DVR, but I look forward to another great season of CFB.

I was in the BYU band one year and wasn't impressed enough to do it more and because I'd rather watch the games without having other responsibilities. Like Ted said it did seem much easier than HS.
As a kid my game day ritual was to layer on as many BYU shirts or sweatshirts as I could along with any other BYU paraphernalia (like hats, foam fingers, hot pads, scarves ect.) I guess the thought was that the more stuff I had on the better they'd do.
