I think both are right. BYU does not have a rigid policy that sets a standard above the NCAA minimums - meaning they leave themselves the opportunity to reach on a lower qualified recruit if they see something else in them. But they have set for themselves some guidelines that are above the NCAA minimums that they try to stick to because they recognize that once they get kids on campus they have to keep them here, and staying academically eligible at BYU may not be as easy there as at some other institutions. I think Bronco has done a pretty good job at balancing this. In the past several years we have had very few academic casualties. It seems that a few years ago it was pretty standard to hear of multiple players sitting out spring ball or fall camp or whatever because they didn't have their grades in order. That happens much less often these days.

I have to agree with Funk on this one. When it comes to coaching hires, BYU fans shouldn't be the ones mocking where they were hired from or promoted from.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostHey not everyone has the chance to raid coaches from Simon Fraser, College of the Canyons, or can promote an assistant to the athletics director for student services."Take it to the Bank"

This is a lie that BYU just keeps on telling over and over again. I attended BYU for undergrad. I have also taken undergrad classes at the University of Utah. There isn't a difference.Originally posted by kccougar View PostI think both are right. So was Utah's old standard lower than the NCAA standard? What changed when they joined the PAC-12?Originally posted by mpfunk View PostI absolutely believe that BYU has a sliding scale. If it is a recruit that they feel is worth the risk, the scale will slide all the way down to the NCAA minimum qualifications. If it is a recruit that isn't quite worth the risk, the scale is higher."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? The same as they are now, if Utah wants them and the qualify with the NCAA, they will get them into school.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostThat would make the most sense.
What were Utah's standards prior to the recent change?
Someone at Utah has some tricks up their sleeves as well. Still wondering how they got Pita and Gabe Long into school. Oregon State must know the same tricks."Take it to the Bank"

This is true. I heard Taysom Hill calls all of the plays in the hurry up, I wonder if he will be offered the OC job next year. Maybe as a player-coach.Originally posted by mpfunk View PostHey not everyone has the chance to raid coaches from Simon Fraser, College of the Canyons, or can promote an assistant to the athletics director for student services.*Banned*

Utah's standards were not lower than the NCAA standard, they cannot be lower. I do think the MWC/WAC made a huge mistake when they stopped allowing partial and non-qualifiers. It was a competitive advantage and using it here and there was extremely beneficial.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostSo was Utah's old standard lower than the NCAA standard? By the way, BYU is the only school right now that will try to get a recruit in as a partial/non-qualifier. It believe that is the route that they tried with Pita.As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

I attended both as well. This is battle that we can keep throwing jabs back and forth on. Neither one will ever get a knockout, because frankly both schools have plenty of extremely underwhelming and unqualified assistant hires. I just don't try to delude myself into thinking otherwise like you. You really are a fantastic PR guy for BYU.Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostThis is true. I rarely showed up at class, did very little work, and got my economics degree from BYU. I was a terrible student, but I would have stayed qualified with doing almost no work.Originally posted by kccougar View PostI attended both as well.
