we arrived in los angeles at noon. immediately had tito's tacos, which are always a tasty treat. the salsa is like a mexican slurpee. got to campus about 45 minutes later and parked on campus in garage. this ended up being about a 10 minute walk from the stadium with the crowd. excellent and easy to get out of.
i noticed a few ute fans milling about, and tons of trojan faithful everywhere. the dedicated fans get there and spend a whole day. there were several older trojan fans wearing hawaiian style shirts with USC logos on them and i am assuming these were the official welcoming committe/ushers/whatever else you want to call them. they are fantastic ambassadors to the university. polite, friendly, knowledgeable. i spoke to a few of them and they were ready to point things out and talk about their team and the game.
i enjoyed the fans. the young obnoxious 20-something kids just have to be ignored. i chatted up usc fans everywhere i went. it was a lot of fun.
first stop was heritage hall. ddd's post immediately became helpful because they had various sections roped off. especially the downstairs with access to the hallway where the various murals and the rose bowl pictures are. the trophies are awesome, but this was what i enjoyed the most. one of the usher/ambassadors took us down a staircase behind the team auditorium and it was us and him and a few others. apparently they had it blocked off that day and so the only people coming down there were folks who knew how to get there from the auditorium. the hallway is awesome with photos of the greats plastering the walls.
after that, attended the band concert in front of heritage. the band is friggin' huge and loud and rambunctous. the ucla sucks song was particularly enjoyable as the whole crowd got into it.
wandered down trousdale and saw tommy trojan, mingled with fans, listened to the band again as they led the way down to the stadium, and then found george tirebiter. got a nice shot of the pooch with my utah hat on... might use that as an avatar next year, but after the result of the game, i'll just save him for later.
went to the colliseum with everyone else. grabbed myself a bacon dog - not sure if i'll do that again. delicious, but YOWZA! anyways...
sat by the prestigious LAUte and Boylen Over, and enjoyed what i could hear of Senioritis (especially when there was a difficulty with the scoreboard, and he shouted out "what is this place, Wyoming?"" Then, went back to the car and headed to Phillipe's for the world's best double dip. amazing.
it was a great day. DDD's gameday suggestions were terrific. i found the game to be a great family environment and very welcoming to the visitor's fans. they want you to make sure that you feel their history - and they do a great job of showing it to you.
btw - the constant band playing and cheerleaders yelling and the fact that the visiting team has to wait to enter the lockerroom until the trojans saunter slowly in first, is a great mind game and home field advantage.
great day, and this is a 5 star thread.
