I think Doman did a decent job. It would have looked better for him if his QB could have executed better in the 1st half.

I thought he did a good job of taking what the defense was giving him. I wasn't frustrated with the play calling.

There was one play that was confusing. I'll admit ignorance, but I don't understand the purpose behind a three step drop and then throwing it to the slot receiver on an out pattern to the strong side of the field. It just didn't seem effective, it's an extremely difficult throw and catch to make and each time (I counted it twice) the LB was all over it and we were lucky to get a yard. IMO three step drops are most effective with a quick slant or something over the middle. I've never been a fan of throwing the ball across the field.

The end of 1st half calling was my only complaint. I actually liked the gameplan

I think C+ is too kind. The one special teams play that was all that positive (besides made extra points, I guess) was the tackle on the last kickoff.

I agree with this. Special teams hurt BYU. C+ is too generous.

A couple of quick thoughts before I watch the replay (how great is that?):

-Heaps should settle in; I think it was a little overwhelming for him.

-Pendleton looks great. I wondered how he would be post-injury, and he's back in full.

-I liked Holt's two blocks on the Alisa catch and run. He's got upside.

-I also liked Fangupo brick-walling that dude.

-Bronco had his defense ready. It seems to be working to have him keep the DC duties. He may be mellowing a little (read: not quite as grumpy with the media) as he grows into his job, but he's still intense.

-J. Sorensen makes me nervous. An inconsistent kicker usually comes back to bite. Hopefully he can get things squared away. He also intrigues me with that monster leg.

An exciting game and a good win for the Cougs in SEC country.

I don't get the sense that anyone is truly down on Heaps...in fact, quite the opposite. Ever since he commited to the Y, fans have gone all in on him and so they're going to defend him at all costs regardless of the situation, which isn't negative or a bad thing...if he's your guy, he's your guy and you should push all your chips in on him.

He's still just a sophomore, so he's going to make some stupid mistakes, but he's got an incredible amount of poise and responded well after the INT despite looking really rattled right afterward. If he was, he didn't play like it.

This poise is what gives me high hopes. He throws the pick, and proceeds to march down the field. Only to have a missed FG. So he marched down the field again and scored a TD. It was the exact sort of situation that he could have folded, he could have become a head case. Instead it seemed like it woke him up, and he started making some great reads and nice throws. Not rattled at all. I was impressed, although I did wish that he was on target at the beginning of the game.

I agree. I loved the way we ran the ball to set up play action and especially those bootlegs, which were money. Heaps really seemed comfortable on those roll-outs.

Gary Sheide (sp?) mentioned that on the BYUTV post-game show. He said Heaps needs to get in there and make a tackle in that situation.

BYU had no business losing this game. I only believe the "we stopped ourselves" line so far; Ole Miss gets credit for causing BYU's frustrations. That said, I don't think you can argue that the better team didn't win today.

People aren't down on Heaps, they are giving him way too much credit. He had a bad game against a terrible defense. Yes the guy has a ton of talent, but he, to date, hasn't produced on the field. Even against a bad defense today, he wasn't good.

I expect Heaps to be a very good QB at BYU and probably will be one this year, but he was bad today. I'm amazed to see grades in the C or B range for him.

Riley Nelson spent the entire post game show on 1320 once again just crucifying Jake Heaps and that pick six. It was like Uterus from ufn was doing the show.
