I don't think either Switzer or Saban are jerks, at least in this context. Switzer was absolutely loved by the Oklahoma faithful. I think maybe the better comparison for Switzer, in terms of personality, would be Ron McBride -- Switzer had that persona where he would joke around and seemed to want people to like him. I think Stoops is the one, among the successful Oklahoma coaches, that would be considered a jerk, at least in comparison to Bronco. Maybe the comparison for Saban would be that his is like Urban Meyer, says the right things for where he is coaching but upsets people at his previous school.Originally posted by jay santos View PostI know these coaches were jerks from a national perspective. Did they act jerky to their own fan base? Most likely they did, especially Knight. I don't see him catering to anyone. You have to energize the fan base and you have to be able to convince kids and their parents that BYU is where they should attend. Is Bronco doing that effectively? I think the answer would be yes, based on empirical results. I guess not that many people think he's a jerk or they like that he's a jerk.
Saban also doesn't seem to be a jerk to me, and maybe I'm wrong because I don't follow him, but he seems more like someone who is good at public relations. I think in his case, the jerk title is because he had success at LSU and then a couple of years later went to their SEC West rival Alabama.

That's fair as ultimately it's the players who matter.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostGranted I only took a couple statistics classes at the Y (one of which was 7:30 am in auditorium of that small building across from Kimball Tower. Thus I slept through 75% of lecture time) but I can't quite make the correlation between Bronco's (alleged) dweebiness and his (questionable) mediocrity.
FTR, I don't find him to be the most dynamic nor enjoyable media presence either. However, by all public and personal accounts I've heard his players love him. It would be nice to have both facets, but of the two, I think having his disciples be willing towalk over hot coalsrun the Y for him, preferable to being a charismatic quote.
We all saw what recruiting the uninitiated can do to our unusual program but I can't help but wait impatiently for the day we once again have a coach that can balance the church and football successfully. One that can get the recruits Bronco has been unable or unwilling to pursue in order to beat those more difficult teams on our schedule. As a Ute fan I know my opinion means little, but I think Bronco is a good man who is doing very well at a uniquely challenging D1 coaching job - the most unusual such job in the USA. I used to think he was sanctimonious, but I now think he's really sincere and trying to do something very different and honorable at BYU. I've never said anything good about a Ute before, but that may be the most beautiful piece of trolling I've ever read. Congratulations, sir. The classic elegance and flawless execution of your approach leave me gasping.Originally posted by LA Ute View PostAs a Ute fan I know my opinion means little, but I think Bronco is a good man who is doing very well at a uniquely challenging D1 coaching job - the most unusual such job in the USA. maybe he should just quit and spend more time with his family.Originally posted by jay santos View PostListening to these Bronco/Holmoe interviews with Wrubell.
I love how they're spinning everything about independence as a positive. It's quite hilarious. But anyway. It's very petty for me to bring up, but I just can't listen to Bronco without being completely annoyed with what he says.
First he says independence and these bye weeks in November are great because he and the players can spend more time with their family. Seriously?
Then he says he was kind of caught in the middle over Thanksgiving, knowing he had to go back to work with football, not being able to completely give himself to his family. Then he chuckles and says something like "I know no one out there has any idea what I'm saying." No BYU fan listening to the interview has any idea what it's like to juggle work and family and have a difficult time dedicating entire focus to family knowing they have something intensive work-related they're going to have to get back to? Come on Bronco. Be a human.
It's so minor and petty. But it's the difference between being a charismatic guy that people love and being an asshole no one likes. "i'm sure your listeners can relate to that tough feeling of not being able to wholly dedicate yourself to family blah blah blah" vs "i'm different, i'm better than everyone else, my life is more difficult than everyone else blah blah blah".
