Why does Bronco have to be a dick sometimes?

A friend of mine was working with Steve Cleveland during his BYU tenure as HC. Steve told my buddy that he did his daily gym workout at 4:30 a.m. so he wouldn't be beset by fans with suggestions or questions about the program. I think all coaches at high-level programs face this. I don't blame Bronco at all for what he said here.

Bronco lacks Lavell capacity to suffer fools gladly, but I recall 71 used to have a tabling where even Lavell had enough of the dumbasseye within the metrosexual shrilling faithful. Bronco SHOULD pretend better. He needs to be seen as approachable and stroking the inner thighs of the fan base. That creates support and $$$$ support. Saying that the guy deals with a fan base full of morons and I can understand why he gets testy. I also believe that while Bronco loves to coach and compete he hates much about college sports. I can see how a guy who values effort and hard work hates having to rub the inner thighs of rich guys who have bought their rights to his attention. He knows he needs their support, but a leopard struggles changing his spots.

For those who don't remember he Lavell story, I shall repeat because it is a good one.

The setting. BYU vs SDSU. BYU comes from a long ways down to have a chance to tie or go for two and the win at SDSU, with basically no time left. A tie gives BYU the conference championship and a trip to the Holiday Bowl. Lavell goes for the tie and the fans, players and coaches are dancing around just like we would have if we won.

Fan calls in. Lavell, why didn't you go for two.

Lavell. We had done a great job coming back. Didn't make sense on taking a loss after working so hard to get in this position. Remeber, a tie gave us the conf. championship.

Fan. Yes, we want to win games.

Lavell. We want to win championships.

Fan. Well, if I was the coach, we would have gone for the win.

Lavell. That is why I am coaching and you are calling in.

I am not so sure Lavell didn't think fans are as stupid as Bronco does. However, their styles of dealing with that I think are different.

Stylewise I think Lavell is more like Pres. Hinckley and Pres. Reagan

Bronco more like Barak Obama and Elder Packard.

Remember, I am talking style here. Not how good the person is, how good a coach they are or which kingdom they will end up in.

Last night on channel two, of course they showed it on channel 2, I saw the exchange. Although Bronco said he was joking, if he was joking he was doing so while being pissed.

Who knows, although Bronco says he doesn't pay attention to what sports writers and fans are saying, maybe someone told him folks were a little dissapointed with this class and he walked into the meeting already with not so much a warm feeling for the fans and media.

I love how they're spinning everything about independence as a positive. It's quite hilarious. But anyway. It's very petty for me to bring up, but I just can't listen to Bronco without being completely annoyed with what he says.

First he says independence and these bye weeks in November are great because he and the players can spend more time with their family. Seriously?

Then he says he was kind of caught in the middle over Thanksgiving, knowing he had to go back to work with football, not being able to completely give himself to his family. Then he chuckles and says something like "I know no one out there has any idea what I'm saying." No BYU fan listening to the interview has any idea what it's like to juggle work and family and have a difficult time dedicating entire focus to family knowing they have something intensive work-related they're going to have to get back to? Come on Bronco. Be a human.

FWIW I agree completely (as if everyone already didn't know). His blatant lie about this schedule vs the MWC schedule is blind allegiance and nothing more. I realize it gives guys like Napper immense pleasure to see fans unable to "pull the string" but the guy is beyond weird.

I'm a fan of a team to the point that I chat online nearly everyday. I obsess for the 8 months that I can't watch football. I wear a BYU helmet to bed. Conversely I casually turn on MSNBC, FoxNews, or CNN and only do so when news is being reported and not when one of the narcisists is talking. The voicebox for my BYU obsession is my least favorite mission companion and a Pharisee. Big difference.

Odd. Many of the great college coaches of our lifetime are generally considered to be huge jerks. Switzer, Saban, Spurrier, Jimmy Johnson, Bobby Knight, to name a few.

I know these coaches were jerks from a national perspective. Did they act jerky to their own fan base? Most likely they did, especially Knight. I don't see him catering to anyone. You have to energize the fan base and you have to be able to convince kids and their parents that BYU is where they should attend. Is Bronco doing that effectively? I think the answer would be yes, based on empirical results. I guess not that many people think he's a jerk or they like that he's a jerk.

Granted I only took a couple statistics classes at the Y (one of which was 7:30 am in auditorium of that small building across from Kimball Tower. Thus I slept through 75% of lecture time) but I can't quite make the correlation between Bronco's (alleged) dweebiness and his (questionable) mediocrity.

FTR, I don't find him to be the most dynamic nor enjoyable media presence either. However, by all public and personal accounts I've heard his players love him. It would be nice to have both facets, but of the two, I think having his disciples be willing to walk over hot coals run the Y for him, preferable to being a charismatic quote.
