Agree. But Cam Newton to Auburn is somewhat different. CN had already attended two colleges (Florida, Blinn) in different states than his own (Georgia) by the time of his JUCO recruitment. He knew the ropes. My take is that CN knew the ropes all too well. Perhaps my vision is clouded because this is the $EC.

But even if CN didn't know about it, I don't see how the NCAA can ignore it. Auburn would need to be punished (if true). By the time the NCAA wheels get in motion, CN will be in the NFL. Only punishment he might have is having to surrender his Heisman or not winning the Heisman out of the fear he may have to return it.

These players know that their family is taking money. These players see the change in their parents' lifestyles and no doubt, someone close to the situation would mention that the parents received money. There really is NO WAY that the player is unaware of it all.

Some good points here. I just don't know how you could penalize Auburn without punishing Cam which is why I voted yes.

I am not sure it even matters if Cam knew or not. As Junkie noted what about Reggie? I don't know, but was Reggie's knowledge of his parents hook up relevant in his punishment? And as Tick said, if the NCAA didn't punish Cam they'd have a mess on their hands as pastors across the country would be getting new pews in their churches courtesy of football boosters.

Anyway, the NCAA created this monster by sitting on this info for a year. Miss State turned over the pay for play allegations long ago. Just like with USC they'll sit on it because the NCAA can't afford to punish Auburn right now. The NCAA is all about money first and foremost and they're not going to take out one of their cash cows right now. Likewise, I agree with DDD that Auburn is going to milk this as long as they can. They'd rather take a MNC and later vacate it while claiming innocence and no wrongdoing than turn themselves in now. It makes no sense from a prestige and money POV to fall on their sword now. They're all in.

At this point there is far too much smoke for their not to be a fire of some sorts.

Cam can play, but Auburn can't play for the NC. That's my answer.

Thorough and fascinating summary of the Newton scandal (long):

The idea that Auburn could lose their accreditation and get booted from the SEC is insane.

The NCAA has a new president as of this past April. It's former UW president Mark Emmert. He was at Washington for six years, but he really is a LSU man through and through, i.e. James Carville is his best friend from back in the day. It will be interesting to see if he handles this situation differently from his predecessors. Will he act quickly, once he has the facts, or will he let the SEC dirt slide until after the season is over?

I'm sure it is facinating but I couldn't make it through part 1. Without having read the novel there let me try to sum it up.

SEC school or schools cheat with recruiting.

                  How close did I come?

So I read through that whole thing. Wow!

Way to much smoke to not have some fire. Cam and the Auburn Tigers are done.

Especially when the wiretaps are released.

Based on the USC precedent, I would say Auburn is adios.

Poor Auburn, USC denies them a national championship twice.

Not only do they cheat but the BOT at Auburn is made up of the owners of Colonial Bank. Colonial Bank was using money to fund illegal gambling in Alabama. Auburn players were allowed to go to these casinos and they had slot machines rigged specifically for Auburn players that they would always win on. They also had unmarked bank cards given to the players as well.

There is a wiretap out there as the FBI was trying to bust the gambling ring but caught conversations about Pay to Play deals being set up to land recruits. That is why the FBI is involved. Basically Cam and his dad talked to the wrong people at the wrong time.

There is a recorded conversation with Trooper Taylor who is the Auburn recruiting coordinator that says "this recruiting class is just about wrapped up, just need another 200k to finish it".

                          Auburn is done.

If it really is that bad and those stories end up being true, or even mostly true, will it force any structural changes throughout all of college football?

One thing's for sure, Juice Newton needs to be banned altogether.

Playing with the Queen of Hearts shouldn't be tolerated by the NCAA, SEC, MWC, or even the Big Sky Conference...
