I rarely hear anything about them from the national media. If they are mentioned it's usually a throwaway after the commenter has already discussed TCU and Boise State at length. Even here on this board about 90% of the football discussion is BYU-related with heavy Ute fan participation. JIC will take time and great care to assemble a thoughtful discussion about the Utes' upcoming opponent, but the thread participation is minimal. A thread about what Bronco ate for lunch would get more comments (and more Ute fan participation).

I haven't really taken any time to watch the Utes this season, but are they really that flavorless?
One telling commentary is that even in a down year, BYU is closing deals with traditional powers such as Ga tech, West Virginia, Texas, Notre Dame, etc. BYU is consistently invited to national invitational-type games (Pigskin Classic, Jerry Jones game last season in Dallas, FedEx Field, etc)

Meanwhile, on the heels of 2 BCS wins and 2 undefeated seasons, the Utes were asked to come to the PAC 10 as a second alternate, with a request that they improve their overall sports program, and with the stipulation that they receive no money for awhile.

I think the brand equity here is quite clear. One school sells, the other one does not.

Funny how those are never in January.

The outcomes of our games (save Pittsburgh, which got plenty of talk nationally immediately afterward) may be boring and uninteresting, but anyone who thinks Antoine Smithson is boring and uninteresting needs to be watered and fertilized daily. Or embalmed. Take your pick.

I predict that as this year goes on more and more schools will want to play BYU. The trajectory of the program is pretty clear.

could be. do you think they will ask us to play for free for awhile? that would be a slap in the face, but admittedly indicative of the quality and perception of the program.

Thank you Topute. I have seen similar predictions of BYUs demise between 2002 and 2005.

I think the disliker of Sloan forgot about the Cotton Bowl when the Cougars squeaked by the 5th or 6th best team out of the Big 12.

I would think they will ask you to play for whatever the BCS conference that wanted you was offering.

1996 is a lot closer to 1984 than it is to 2010. So lets talk about National Championships.

Funny that you think those losses 'invitational games' are a big deal. I guess they are when neither of your teams will be playing in a bowl game.

Instead of paying their own way. BYU has decided to build their own super schedule and then get paid millions of dollars for it not having to share with some lame conference.

                          Brilliant!

                            Two factors:

                            1. Ridiculously poor schedule.

                            2. The mtn.

Boise State will learn the effects of this combination soon enough.

That was the year BYU set an NCAA record with 14 wins in a season. Awesome!

Agreed. So BYU will be making millions next season with its new deal, per what the market was offering. That is great! I am sure you would agree that it would suck to be playing for free (not to mention embarrassing! ).
