Without his Emerald Nuts Bowl performance, I doubt he would have been the starter. The amount of confidence that game instilled in him, his coaches, and Ute fans alike was a huge catalyst for that decision. Kwhitt wouldn't have had the balls to redshirt Johnson for the unknown Grady, but where Ratliff had beaten BYU and then GTech in convincing fashion, he had a leg to stand on for that decision. Even if he had started Grady, Johnson's redshirt would have ended 3 games into the season, once the Arm Tattoo had been exposed for his true capabilities.Originally posted by BoylenOver View PostNope, Brian Johnson still would've redshirted, but instead of Ratliff it would've been Tommy Grady in 2006.
Wait, that further proves your point, doesn't it?
Anyway, if BYU had won in OT, Ratliff still would've been the starter in 2006.Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss

Those are excellent points but I wasn't able to follow the 2005 season very closely. I did see the Utah-BYU game and I guess from your perspective it could be said that BYU "blew" that game. To me it looked like Ratty threw strikes all afternoon. (And although you called me a name I won't respond in kind. There are only a few true zoobs on this site and you are not one of them. Sorry, just being honest.) Also, I may not ever be very good at the knife-twisting. I need to be 20 years younger to care about my proficiency in that regard. Instead I'd rather contemplate what calling I'd try to steer Max's way if he were in my ward. Maybe counselor in the YM presidency. Or physicial activities chairman. Or ward missionary.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostIn reality, BYU's 2005 loss was much, much more painful than 04 or 08. In 04 and 08, BYU was supposed to lose, and most of us knew they would. However, in 05 BYU had a the better team, and, if they play that game 10 times, BYU probably wins it 8 of the 10 times. On top of that, BYU had a chance to keep Utah from a bowl game and put Whittingham on the hot seat, just a season into his HC tenure.
By blowing that game, BYU not only allowed the Utes a chance to salvage the season with a rivalry win and a bowl win, but laid the foundation for 2008 by allowing Brett Ratliff to emerge as the 2006 starter, which allowed Johnson an extra year to 'heal.' If BYU wins the 2005 game, Ratliff would never even been in consideration for the starting job the following season, and Brian Johnson would have likely burned his senior year in Utah's mediocre 2007 campaign.
In summary, if you were a more savvy Zoot, you'd know to twist the 2005 knife, as opposed to those 04 and 08 knives which are your clear favorites.“There is a great deal of difference in believing something still, and believing it again.”

I still have nightmares of Curtis Brown dropping that perfectly thrown ball on one of the first few plays of the game. (was it the very first play?) It was wide open and a sure touchdown. Flat out dropped it. It took BYU a while to recover. 2005 was a very frustrating loss.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostIn reality, BYU's 2005 loss was much, much more painful than 04 or 08. I still have nightmares about Cole Miyahira trying to cover somebody. In fact twice he was in perfect position on plays and never gets his head around.

Max was mentioned on PTI Rundown. Wilbon isn't ready to give him Kurt Warner status just yet.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Does that mean a crazy wife with a lesbian haircut? Or that he is going to wear gloves as a QB in an indoor stadium? I need to know what exactly the full Kurt Warner is.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostMax was mentioned on PTI Rundown. You are indeed pissing in the wind. You also fail to realize that God will not be mocked and neither will His football team. Max's rant was a righteous rebuke of the wicked. The uncircumsized do not pass judgement or question the religious devotion of the Lord's annointed. Know your place, Phillistine.Originally posted by Devildog View PostHe didn't say anything that hasn't already been said before by players from both teams.
The big deal seemed to be that a Mormon Senior Quarterback from BYU said it, (He is a representative of his faith as much as he is for his team).
You know, along the lines of, "Christ like behavior", "practice what you preach", "turn the other cheek", and just recently Pres. Uchtdorf's talk. BYU claims the football program is an extension of the University's mission.
It seems like he just confirmed a lot of people's preconceived notions about BYU. Many out there made it into a big deal because of the whole "I told you so" idea of BYU speaking about living higher ideals, but not really backing that up in practice. It was easy for many non-LDS people to see a "do what I say, not what I do' situation with Max.
If Utah made it's own "monster"... what did Max do for BYU? Use the same reasoning you did earlier.
I understand it is football. Max might have said what many fans would like to say themselves... but it isn't what the LDS church would want their representatives saying.
I am just pissing in the wind here anyway. BYU fans are going to see it from their own point of view, regardless...
