Also - neither Beck or Berry played Florida State on the road as freshmen or had to go up against a top five team with the best defense in the country.
Berry did better against USC on the road as a rs Soph in a very early start in his career. I think Heaps has a game or two of excuses left before the fans start blaming him. He looks like a freshman in pocket presence, decision making and accuracy. The offense looks bad because he is bad. He is young and he is pressing. I hope his confidence survives but I doubt it will. If I were the coach, I would have sacrificed someone else.

This TCU lady is holding up a sign for the players as they were coming on the field. Unfortunately you can't read in the picture I took with my phone but it said, "Practice football, not polygamy".

At half time she was holding up another sign that read: "BYFU". Some people in Fort Worthless are dorks. Some like this are more than others but, generally, most TCU fans are really nice people.

And some BYU fans are really dorks. A BYU fan (or let's just say a guy wearing a BYU shirt) was yelling at the offense as they were going into the locking room after the game telling them they needed to play with "more heart like the defense". I didn't get a picture of the dork with his small daughter on his shoulders but here is a picture of Coach Mendenhall looking over in his direction:

I hope that guy never becomes an youth sports coach.
Why so much hate. Don't get it. If she didn't do the BYFU I would guess she is a member of some religion that preaches hate toward mormons. Something like they are an evil cult.

      • Bronco looked strange in a t-shirt yesterday, especially since it was tucked into slacks.

          • After watching this game and thinking back on all of BYU's other games this year, I think Andrew Rich could be the best overall defender in the league. If BYU didn't have this kid they would probably be 0-7 right now. Andrew just doesn't have much help.

            • I don't have much to add on this game:

We were obviously completely outmatched in every phase of the game and at every position. TCU's program is at such a higher level than ours it's not funny. And not just this season. They've got a system with great recruiting, great player development, and young guys ready to step in when seniors leave. We don't.

I didn't blame the coaches or Heaps for not sitting on the ball the last two series of the first half. If our goal was to lose a 17-0 game, they could have done that. Overall, the offensive game plan was about as good as it could have been, I thought. Running the ball mixed with short passes and just enough long passes to keep the D honest. More running and they end up completely stopping us three and outs. More passing and we have more INT's and shorter drives and we lose by 50.

It's just the kind of game you have to hope you get by with no injuries and no players losing confidence.

              Next up Wyoming.

              • I started this thread, so maybe I'll end it, too. My thoughts on the game:

-WTF was with the play calling? I know there are other threads about this, but that was absolutely awful. After the first two series, it was painfully obvious that we weren't going to get anything by running delays and misdirections out of a shotgun split formation. I was calling for the I formation by the middle of the first quarter, and by the end of the first half, BYU had about 3 positive yardage plays, all coming from running out of the I. (It was also interesting to come back here and see how many of you were calling for the same thing.)

-Interesting that on BYU's only decent drive of the game, they ran about 75% of the plays from the I. Kariya up the middle, then run some play action. Why did it take 2.5 quarters to figure it out? And why did we move away from it once we got into scoring territory and the rest of the game?

-Let's see, we have 10 yards of total offense in the first half. Who was the genius who figured we could now now drive 80 yards in 1:30 and score before the end of the half?

-Defense looked solid for the most part. The two TDs for TCU at the end of the half both came when Andrew Bitch was blitzing and the middle of the field was wide open. On the second one he blitzed from about 12 yards off the LOS and the ball was airborne by the time he reached the LOS.

-BYU's WRs were covered all freaking day. I don't know if it has been that bad the rest of the season, but seriously I can't think of a single pass play where Heaps dropped back to pass and there was a receiver open. It's amazing he didn't get sacked more. TCU's secondary was incredible, although I know covering BYU's WRs hasn't exactly been a monumental task this year.

-I'm not critical of GP going for it on 4th late in the game. Earlier in the game, TCU fans around me had been talking about how awful their kicker is and that they shouldn't try a field goal if they are outside of the 10-yard line. There was no way they were going to try a FG on 4th down at the 30-ish. Even though BYU had been mostly ineffective on offense, the win hadn't been clinched yet in GP's mind.
