It's not half as clear as some want to think. Everyone knows that he has basically no help. The fact is that the same could be said about any other member of the offense. Heaps is playing at exactly the level of the WRs and TEs, no better.

How can you tell he is playing to the same level of the WRs and TEs? That makes no sense.

Unless you have watched every play and can say who has the made the mistakes on every one of them that was unsuccesful you really can not say that.

What doesn't make sense? The WRs suck, the TEs suck, and Heaps sucks. The WRs have hurt Heaps by dropping a lot of balls, and Heaps has hurt the WRs by missing a lot of open receivers.

I still put the vast majority of the blame on coaching, but I tire of the constant claim that Heaps is fine. I think he will be fine, but he isn't yet.

Yeah, I'm sure patterson was thinking "I'm in the mood to show some class so I'll throw Bronco a bone here and go for it on 4th and 3 when I should just kick a field goal, but just to keep them honest, I'm going to throw for the endzone. If they defend it well then great, but if we score, well, they should have defended it better."

I guess we have different definitions of class, or at least how one shows class.

it's not that they scored, it's the way they did.

Knock it off. This board has enough problems without a dose of middle-age lechery.

The point is that running it up the middle is absolutely the standard procedure in such situations for "classy" coaches. It gives you a first down and allows you to then run out the clock without scoring. Coaches don't kick the field goal precisely because they don't need the points and don't want to run up the score.

What Patterson did is obviously much worse than kicking the field goal, but the fact is that running it on that play would have been the "classy" move.

            • Classy is for guys who have the mentality they want to win the Sportsmanship Trophy.

Patterson is doing what he can to insure the highest ranking his team can get in the BCS. Frankly no one but BYU fans with hurt feelings care that he threw the pass and score 7 more. Of course, getting beat by 28 or 21 makes no difference to me as a BYU fan.

Totally agree. I have no problem with them trying to score as many points as possible. TCU should be pissed at BYU for lowering their strength of schedule by losing to the likes of Utah State.

                • This team has some issues. 1) Heaps isn't accurate and doesn't know the offense very well; 2) we are a passing team with a running teams players; 3) No players are stepping up to lead; 4) we have talent but lack depth and experience.

I'm worried about Heaps. He isn't being well protected by the play calling. Our fan base is not forgiving of QBs. At this point he looks worse wham Beck or Berry early in their careers and our fans turned on those boys badly and never quite forgave them.

I hear ya but I think/hope BYU fans will be more patient for a few reasons, but for starters - neither Beck or Berry played as teenagers at BYU, scant months removed from throwing passes in high school games.

Also - neither Beck or Berry played Florida State on the road as freshmen or had to go up against a top five team with the best defense in the country.

                      • Some pics from the TCU game today...

This TCU lady is holding up a sign for the players as they were coming on the field. Unfortunately you can't read in the picture I took with my phone but it said, "Practice football, not polygamy".

At half time she was holding up another sign that read: "BYFU". Some people in Fort Worthless are dorks. Some like this are more than others but, generally, most TCU fans are really nice people.

And some BYU fans are really dorks. A BYU fan (or let's just say a guy wearing a BYU shirt) was yelling at the offense as they were going into the locking room after the game telling them they needed to play with "more heart like the defense". I didn't get a picture of the dork with his small daughter on his shoulders but here is a picture of Coach Mendenhall looking over in his direction:

I hope that guy never becomes an youth sports coach.

Chuck Cutler had a good response for a fan of some school down that way who was like the woman in your first photo. Apparently she was yelling at BYU players about Mormons and polygamy and Chuck told he as he walked past that screaming at the team wasn't going to do her any good in her attempt to be a sister-wife. He said that she shut up really quick.
