  • How bad is BYU's pass offense?

Covering 2000 through 2010, there are 1294 team-seasons (including the 2010 partial season). The 2010 team is currently

1281st in yards per completion (9.38)
1287th in yards per attempt (4.79)

You would expect that with a team that is dinking-and-dunking so much you would at least trade that off with a higher completion percentage, but that simply hasn't been the case so far.

BYU needs to have a minimum of 60% completions and 12 yards per completion to approach having an acceptable offensive output and they aren't even close right now.

10, 10 and 13 points. That is the result of those stats.
    I'm like LeBron James.

I don't even need those statistics to know it has been real bad. However, I appreciate you putting together in case someone somewhere tries to tell me I am wrong and know nothing about football.

Some decisions can be reversed and corrected in a hurry. I think the coaches decision or indecision at the end of Spring is something that can't be fixed in a week or two.

I like Jake and think he will be a good QB, but some of the throws he made Sat. leads me to believe maybe the decision the coaches had to make wasn't as easy as I thought it was.

Just a few additional stats of interest:

At 15 ppg, BYU is 116th in scoring offense (of 120 teams). It is interesting to note that of the 4 teams below us, three are MWC teams - CSU, Wyoming, and New Mexico.

As a team, we have the 117th best passing efficiency. Only 3 teams are worse, New Mexico being one of them.

Heaps is #112 in individiaul passing efficiency, out of 114 qualifying passers.

We are ranked 95th in passing yards per game.

I was expecting some growing pains this year, and I'm definitely not ready to jump ship, but this has been worse than I had expected.

I don't think it is fair to judge Heaps numbers against other players that have played 3-4 full games. He has played basically 2-2.5 games.

I agree, let's wait and see. Nobody's making a judgment yet. But I think it's a bit naive to think things are going to magically turn around this year. Heaps pass ratings have gone 104, 21, 90, 96. I think Washington was his best game. I think the improvement is going to be slow and incremental this year if at all.

Heaps is a true freshman, who split reps until last week, and has now played 8 quarters roughly against the 4th most difficult schedule in the nation with questionable play-calling and average at best talent around him (minus OL).

4th most difficult schedule yeah maybe but every team we've played has had a better offense than defense comparatively.

Of course. I was just trying to get in an as many excuses for Heaps as I could fit in a sentence.

But it doesn't help the offense any when our defense can't get off the field. Granted, our offense doesn't help our defense with three and outs.

Our offense (98th) and defense (105th) are both near the bottom in 3rd down efficiency. Hence, the problem you just outlined.

UNR's defense is not good. It is their offense that has them ranked so high. That being said, I never tought we would keep pace with UNR offensively. I was actually mildly surprised that they only scored 27 against us and only 3 in the second half.

I hoped for more from BYU offensively this past week, but I didn't think they would light up the scoreboard. They scored 13 points and I expected about 20-24. They didn't miss my expectations all that much. The overall outcome was better than I was expecting.

I would expect this this week against a USU defense that is not so hot when healthy will provide Jake with many opportunities to improve now that they are plagued with several key defensive injuries in the secondary and at linebacker.

Are you kidding? He has improved 75 points in the last two games. By the SDSU game he will have a rating of 170.

For a numbers guy, you don't seem to know how to read a trend-line.
