And 13 of Van Noy's 18.5 career sacks have come against D-1AA teams or D-1A teams with at least 9 losses. With the notable exception of the Tulsa bowl game, Van Noy has largely disappeared in the big games against the better teams BYU has faced over the last two years. You can look at the stats or you can look the film, I really don't care which.
Van Noy has NFL athleticism, but IMO he needs another year of development in college to make himself a more complete and more consistent player if he wants to maximize his draft value.

No dog in this fight, but Kehl benefited for Jorgensen playing on the opposite side(and visa versa, Jan's 08-09 stats suffered w/o someone of Kehl's stature on the team).Originally posted by Indy Coug View PostI think that excuse only goes so far. Hard to argue with saying a football player should return for another year of college, that always ends well. Matt Barkley agrees!Originally posted by Indy Coug View PostVan Noy has NFL athleticism, but IMO he needs another year of development in college to make himself a more complete and more consistent player if he wants to maximize his draft value.Get confident, stupid

I can do that, too:Originally posted by Indy Coug View PostAnd 13 of Van Noy's 18.5 career sacks have come against D-1AA teams or D-1A teams with at least 9 losses.
Bjoern Werner of FSU is second in the nation in sacks with 13 this season. Of those, 4 came against Murray State, 1 against Savannah State, 1.5 against 5-7 Wake Forest, and 1.5 against 4-8 Maryland. He had none against Clemson, South Florida, NC State, Boston College, Duke, Virginia Tech, or Georgia Tech. Take away his 5 sacks against FCS Murray State and Savannah State, and he only had 8 sacks against FBS teams.
Even if you take away Van Noy's 1 sack against FCS Weber State, Van Noy still had 10.5 sacks against FBS teams, compared to Werner's 8.0 against FBS teams, it's clear Werner, considered a top 10 (if not top 5) draft pick this year, feasted even more against poor teams, and disappeared in more games (7) against FBS teams than Van Noy (5).
Somebody get these stats to the NFL quick, so they don't screw up their draft by taking a player who padded his stats against bad teams and disappeared against good ones!If we disagree on something, it's because you're wrong.

One more:
Junior Anthony Barr of UCLA led the NCAA in sacks this season with 13.5. Yet only 6.5 of those (less than half) came against teams with winning records. 5 of his sacks came against teams with 9 or more losses.
He should stay for another year for a little more seasoning, and pick up his production against good teams. If we disagree on something, it's because you're wrong.

South Carolina's Jadeveon Clowney ended the season tied with Werner, with 13.0 sacks.
However, of those, 2.0 were against FCS UAB, 3.5 came against FBS teams with losing records, and 4.5 came against arch rival Clemson in the last game of the season, clearly an outlier that should be disregarded.
He had only 3 sacks against FBS, non-losing, non-rival teams.
In fact, until that last, rivalry game, he was completely out of the national sack picture - without the Clemson game, he would have had only 8.5 sacks, which would have tied him for 30th in the nation.Last edited by SoCalCoug; 12-11-2012, 02:51 PM.If we disagree on something, it's because you're wrong.

Pssst...Clowney went to South Carolina. Carry on, your points are well noted.Originally posted by SoCalCoug View PostClemson's Jadeveon Clowney ended the season tied with Werner, with 13.0 sacks.

I'm not sure where you're seeing anything about Nelson. Maybe you should see an optometrist.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostJust so I understand: KVN is worse than advertised, and Riley is better. Is that correct, Indy?

You know, looking through the list, Jarvis Jones seems to be the only legitimate sack threat in the top 10.
Chris Jones of Bowling Green had 12.5 sacks, but only 1 against a non-MAC, non-WAC FBS opponent (Virginia Tech).
Quanterus Smith (is he related to Quattro Quattro?) of Western Kentucky had 12.5 sacks this season. But his all came in only 4 games (he had no sacks in the remaining 8 games - extremely inconsistent.) 3 of them came against Arkansas State, 5 against FIU, and 1 against Florida Atlantic. Next.
Damontre Moore of Texas A & M had 12.5 sacks - only 6 against teams with winning records, though, and half of those against Alabama, who allowed a lot of sacks this season (23.0 on the season, 53rd in the nation in sacks allowed - the crappy BYU oline allowed 28).
Travis Johnson of San Jose State? Try again - of his 12.0 sacks, 5 came against UC Davis, and 3.5 more came against the likes of UTSA, Texas State (wasn't that the one Sinbad was an o-lineman for?), and Idaho. He was blanked by Stanford, Utah State, and BYU.
I'm tired of reading stats now. But you get the picture.Last edited by SoCalCoug; 12-10-2012, 08:34 PM.If we disagree on something, it's because you're wrong.

Oops. That's a horrible mistake to make, considering I grew up in Greenville County, South Carolina, and hated the local team, Clemson, favoring USC.Originally posted by Jarid in Cedar View PostPssst...Clowney went to South Carolina. Aldon Smith only had 17 sacks after only two years of starting. I think he probably got most of those vs Kansas and whatever Sun Belt teams they played at the beginning of the season.Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
