I'm doing a sport med rotation right now at a D1 school (football is fcs). I'm really curious about the doctor's clearance. Generally, injuries heal in a similar time frame, but every patient is different. Is there a third party doctor that confirms this clearance? Obviously, the school has an interest in the medical redshirt. Seems like a conflict of interest.

I think for most injuries that are common to sports, the team MD provides the clearance. For schools with a medical school, this is usually a physician from the med school. For BYU, I believe there a a few guys in the community that provide (not sure if they volunteer) medical coverage. The team docs that I have known/worked with (high school, college, pro) are very concerned about the patient first. I think they try to get players back as soon as it is safely possible.Originally posted by doctorcoug View PostI'm doing a sport med rotation right now at a D1 school (football is fcs). I understand who provides the clearance. In terms of medical redshirts, is there a third party physician that evaluates the athlete to agree/disagree with the timeframe? This case is a good example. He is given 6 weeks. Suppose he heals slow and is more like 8 weeks. Wouldn't it behoove the university to hold clearance a little bit longer to get the hardship?
I bet there are docs out there that would do this for the love of the game."Don't expect I'll see you 'till after the race"

I'm not sure. I've never heard of it. There are certainly instances where athletes or physician seek a second opinion.Originally posted by doctorcoug View PostMitch Pratte for BYU.

http://www.deseretnews.com/blog/19/1...Track=rss-blogAs reported Thursday, BYU freshman wide receiver Ross Apo suffered an open dislocation of his left index finger on Wednesday that required surgery. He is expected to be out approximately six weeks, but will work to come back as soon as possible.
Apo did not play wide receiver last Saturday against Washington, but he did play on special teams. BYU officials said Friday that the original stats book the night of the game did not list him as participating but that was later corrected. So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

We don't need him.Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostApparently Bronco said tonight that he thinks Apo will get a medical RS. Sounds like we won't be seeing him this year.

How can you get a medical redshirt when you have a redshirt year available? Or does playing a handful of snaps in the opener disqualify one from taking a redshirt year due to injury in the same year?Originally posted by MarkGrace View PostApparently Bronco said tonight that he thinks Apo will get a medical RS. Because Utah uses it more effectively...multiple players with 7 years of eligibility...etc, etcOriginally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostI'm surprised CB and Bronco haven't started calling it blueshirt."Either evolution or intelligent design can account for the athlete, but neither can account for the sports fan." - Robert Brault

I don't think Apo played in the first game. IIRC, he injured the finger during camp.Originally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostBecause he played in the first game this year making his traditional redshirt year unavailable.
