Apo out 6 weeks

I'm doing a sport med rotation right now at a D1 school (football is fcs). I'm really curious about the doctor's clearance. Generally, injuries heal in a similar time frame, but every patient is different. Is there a third party doctor that confirms this clearance? Obviously, the school has an interest in the medical redshirt. Seems like a conflict of interest.

I think for most injuries that are common to sports, the team MD provides the clearance. For schools with a medical school, this is usually a physician from the med school. For BYU, I believe there a a few guys in the community that provide (not sure if they volunteer) medical coverage. The team docs that I have known/worked with (high school, college, pro) are very concerned about the patient first. I think they try to get players back as soon as it is safely possible.

I'm not sure. I've never heard of it. There are certainly instances where athletes or physician seek a second opinion.

As reported Thursday, BYU freshman wide receiver Ross Apo suffered an open dislocation of his left index finger on Wednesday that required surgery. He is expected to be out approximately six weeks, but will work to come back as soon as possible.

Apo did not play wide receiver last Saturday against Washington, but he did play on special teams. BYU officials said Friday that the original stats book the night of the game did not list him as participating but that was later corrected.

How can you get a medical redshirt when you have a redshirt year available? Or does playing a handful of snaps in the opener disqualify one from taking a redshirt year due to injury in the same year?
